Machop and the Stones He Turns Over | A Pokémon Adventure Story about Trying Again After a Mistake
A gentle adventure story for young children about trying again after a mistake.
Machop turns over a flat stone, sets it down beside the little dark hole where it was, and something gray and quick goes off sideways into the dust. He does not watch it go. He is already climbing again, and Brooks, three steps ahead up the dry creek bed, does not see any of it. Machop does this three times on the way up, and he never says a word about why.
Machop likes being the one who carries things - his hands are strong, that is the thing about him people say first, and as long as they are doing something useful he knows exactly what he is. Then a loose stone goes out from under Brooks's foot at the narrow part, Machop catches him, and the little wooden bird Brooks carved himself falls into the crack and comes out in two pieces. Machop puts his hands behind his back. He sits down and says he is not going to touch anything else today. Brooks does not push him. He waits, and he lets it be quiet, and after a while Machop reaches out on his own and turns over one more stone - and this time he watches the small thing go, all the way, until it is gone. Nobody fixes the bird. They carry both pieces up to the pool and set them down side by side, and the light is still on the water when they get there.
