Magikarp Goes First | A Pokémon Adventure Story about Being Somebody's Favorite
A gentle adventure story for young children about being loved for nothing in particular.
Brooks comes down to the pond every day with a tin cup, and every day the game is the same. He tips a thin string of water onto Magikarp's back, Magikarp says the word, and the whole shallow end comes up at once and lands on Brooks. Brooks always goes first. Magikarp has never once started it.
Every time Brooks says "You're my favorite," Magikarp quietly goes under the water - not far, just until only the top of his head is showing - and Brooks never tries to talk him back up. Then the wind takes the cup, and the pond starts carrying it toward the gap under the fence where lost things do not come back. What happens next changes what Magikarp can do. It does not change why Brooks loves him, and the last thing in the story is a boy standing on the bank with a full cup in his hand, waiting.
