Pikachu's Own Way Back | A Pokémon Adventure Story about Feeling Left Out
A gentle adventure story for young children about feeling left out - and about what "not right now" actually means.
Cassian and his Pikachu come up the hill through the tall grass every day after lunch, and Pikachu always gets to the top first. Today there is somebody already up there - three Raichu, standing in a ring in the short grass, keeping a big round seed pod in the air between them. They are Pikachu's family. He runs straight for the middle of the ring with both paws up, and the biggest Raichu says, "Not right now, little spark. We're almost done. Come find us after!"
Nobody is cross with Pikachu. Nobody stops counting. He walks back down the hill by himself, sits at the bottom with his back to it, and lets the feeling out the way a Pikachu does, in small sparks into the dirt. Cassian does not tell him to stop and does not tell him he should not be sad; he just moves his knees back a little and stays. And when Pikachu is ready - not when anyone comes to fetch him, and without ever being told his worry was wrong - he stands up and walks back up the hill on his own.
The Little Feather tells original stories inspired by Pokémon - gentle stories about self-love, emotional regulation, boundaries, leadership, and gratitude.
