Gospel reflection for 3-6 year olds for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, year A.

"Jesus wants Peter to think differently. He says,

'you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.'

'Human things' means thinking the way people think.

'Divine things' means thinking the way God thinks.

Jesus, the Son of the living God, wants Peter to think not like people, but like God.

Peter thinks that death is the end of life, but that is how people think, not how God thinks. God does not say 'no' to Jesus going to Jerusalem because God says 'yes' to life, and Jesus says, 'Yes, yes, yes!' too."

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Ages 6-9): Peter's Choice

Gospel reflection for 6-9 year olds for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, year A.

"Peter hears Jesus say he will be killed, but perhaps he does not hear Jesus say that he will be raised from the dead. Does Peter understand what will happen on the third day? How can he? It has never happened before. Peter cannot see into the future. So Peter takes Jesus aside, plants himself firmly in front of him, and blocks the path.

Jesus says,

'Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.'

Whoa.

Jesus calls Peter, 'Satan.' We know Satan is a name used for the devil. Does Jesus think that Peter is evil now? That Peter is the devil??

The word 'satan' means 'adversary.' An adversary works against us, tries to stop us. Peter stands in Jesus' way. Blocking the way, Peter is an adversary to Jesus. The Rock becomes a stumbling block, something that causes a person to trip and fall."

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Ages 9-12): What Will They Give In Return For Their Life

Gospel reflection for 9-12 year olds for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, year A.

"Jesus knows his life is a gift. What can he give God in return? What can he offer but the greatest thing he has: his life. Everything. He lays down his life, he offers his whole self in the greatest act of Love. It is the most complete act of Love because he is the Son of God who is Love. Jesus is completely Love.

Jesus is also completely human, so is it easy for him to lay down his life? Probably not. How hard it must be for him, then, to hear his Rock say, 'God forbid it! This must never happen to you.' Peter makes it harder for him to offer himself to God. Peter sets his mind on human things while Jesus tries to keep his mind on the divine Plan. Peter stands in the way; Peter acts against Love."

Gospel reflection for 3-6 year olds for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time, year A.

(Adults, the Gospel for this Sunday considers moral behaviour. For the youngest children it is important that they know for whom they are choosing to behave in a certain manner, before considering what that behaviour should be. In fact, we can say that this is vital, since God invites us into covenant relationship. We want the children to fall in love with God; all behaviour will flow out of this relationship. The following reflection therefore, considers Who God Is.)

(Adults, I don't mind saying that it was EXTREMELY difficult to find in this Sunday's Gospel the face of God that the youngest children need to see. But there towards the end, sandwiched between discussions of vineyards and fruit, is verse 44 about a stone. Perfect.)

Gospel reflection for 6-9 year olds for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, year A.

(Adults, the parable in this Sunday's Gospel is upsetting, to be followed by an even more upsetting one next week–yikes! This reflection acknowledges that the parable is upsetting, but encourages the children to reflect upon the ideal, on the Plan of God that is somewhat overshadowed by the behaviour of the tenants.)
