The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: Science Fiction for Kids
The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a serialized science-fiction story for kids (start with Episode 1), told in 15-20 minute episodes for parents to put on when driving around town, or to marathon on road trips, or to bond over before bed. The story centers on Finn Caspian, an 8-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. He and his friends Abigail, Elias and Vale are Explorers Troop 301, taking off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help the occasional alien, and solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the Marlowe. When pressed, we describe it as a "mystery gang" story, sort of like Scooby-Doo in space. The story is written and performed by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out, former web editor of Time Out Chicago Kids, and father of two boys. His son Griffin, 7, serves as editor of the story, appearing in episodes to critique, make predictions and express skepticism that his father knows what he's talking about, which also happens to be the way the rest of their relationship works. In honor of the summer family vacation, members of Kids Listen—the nonprofit org full of the best kids' podcasters in all the land—are publishing episodes related to road trips! As big fans of the games you play in the car on those long rides, we thought we'd make one up for our listeners. All you have to do is record your kids (or your whole family!) saying the words or sounds on the list below, email us the file, and we'll edit it into the pre-recorded story and send it back to you. Just use the voice app on your phone, and record it as one file and email to earth@finncaspian.com. I’m going to record the story, and I’ll edit your responses in, and send you the mp3. I’ll also send you a PDF of the story, so if you’re going on a road trip, you can take it with you. Here's what I need from you: A noun An adjective A name A verb A pleasant sound An ominous sound The sound of a robot turning on The sound of a confused robot The sound of an alien practicing karate kicks The sound of a robot asking an alien to stop practicing karate kicks A fruit And the sound of a robot eating a fruit I know it probably sounds complicated. In this week's episode, the Explorers Troop 301 take a backseat as Paige takes centerstage. We find out what's been happening to Paige as she's been held prisoner by King Huxley, and it will likely surprise no one that she's taking matters into her own hands. But when she comes across another inhabitant of the castle, will it be a friend or foe? This is by far the most difficult puzzle we've had in the show's run. The solution is an anagram of "SEEK THICKET RIM." The key is really in the -ICK sound. That might help crack it. If your child is too young to read, or just beginning, you can also talk about anagrams in terms of sounds. That may not help solve this puzzle, but it may help with understanding anagrams and how words fit together. One more clue, in white text. Highlight if you want to see it: It's three words, the second word is "three." And after playing around with the letters for a while, you can always use an internet anagram solver (it's not cheating if you've given it an honest try). But this year, an uninvited guest causes some trouble for the Explorers (especially Voltronix Zu). For parents: There's nothing about this story that's particularly scary compared to other Finn stories, but the ghost's voice is maybe a little creepy. So it might be worth giving it a listen or testing it out first.
