The Sapling

2024/1/8

10:21

What’s it like to be a little sapling on a chilly winter morning, bending and swaying in the wind? In this gentle tale, the little sapling strikes up a conversation with the tall oak tree about being little, being big, and … being trees! It sure is special to be a sapling!

This story features acoustic guitar and some squirrelly shakers.

We’re thrilled to be back for Season Two of Big Giant Book! This story picks up where we left off in The Acorn. What a difference a year makes!

After the story, we share a special update about a big giant change for the new season: we’re launching a Big Giant Book CLUB!

Big Giant Book Club will focus on the previous week’s story and include interactive activities, character interviews, playful songs, and more. It will take the place of our after show, with lots of bonus features and fun! All centered around the previous week’s episode. We hope you love it!

Here’s what the new schedule looks like for this month:

  • January 8:   New story (The Sapling)
  • January 15: Big Giant Book Club
  • January 22: New Story
  • January 29: Big Giant Book Club

The Cat Likes That (Revisited!)

2023/12/11

05:57

As promised, we have a special bonus episode featuring a favorite remastered tale from way back. "That Cat Likes That" is a cozy story about a cat who likes quite a few classically cat-approved things (and dislikes quite a few things, too). We hope you love this updated version!

Special announcement: we have another bonus video available to enjoy on our YouTube channel! You may remember the story "Meese" - a funny tale about a nice little farm full of many animals and their interesting, pluralized names. Check it out!

https://www.youtube.com/@BigGiantBook

Even though Season One has wrapped, we still have one more bonus remaster episode coming up. Next Monday, December 18th, we'll be back to share a fully re-recorded story and music. Then, we'll be back with all-new episodes for Season Two starting on Monday, January 8th!

If you loved this story as much as the cat loves sleeping in the sun, please rate us in your listening app. Your ratings and reviews help us reach more people every week - and they completely make our day!

The Bedtime Bundle

2023/11/20

32:20

Snuggle up with our sleepiest stories from Season One! This episode is a little different - it doesn’t have our usual intro or aftershow, but instead features three cozy stories woven together with relaxing music.

We start off with the mellow “Meadow Babies”.  Meet the baby bunnies, beavers, trout, geese, and hummingbirds. Little ones will enjoy imagining the animals in their cozy meadow homes.

Next, let imaginations soar in the story “The Lemon Yellow Kite”.  This uplifting, calm, and peaceful story will resonate with the persistence and hopefulness inside all of us.

Finally, we visit the Sweet Creek Kingdom for the story “Sweet Creek Bedtime”. This bedtime story features a relaxing stroll through the enchanted kingdom under the moon and stars. For anyone who has wondered where unicorns sleep, this story will answer that question and perhaps quite a few more.

This episode ends with five minutes of peaceful instrumental music.

Sweet dreams!

Pebble In My Sandal

2023/8/14

12:52

Let’s focus on our breath! Have you ever had a feeling that felt so powerful, you didn’t know what to do next? What can you do? In this song story, we highlight those “pebble in my sandal” situations, then we focus on mindfully smelling apple pie and blowing bubbles (breathe in, breathe out).

This story features acoustic guitar.

After the story, Rachel and Joey talk about finding their breath. Then they return to the “I Found A Sound” game. If you’d like to send in an idea for a sound (or even an audio clip of your own!), please team up with a caregiver to send it to us via email at mailbox@biggiantbook or in a social media message (below).

Little Day Moon

2023/5/29

12:35

We're back with another "Song Story" this week! After spotting the moon in the midday sky, we couldn't help but wonder what the moon might think of all the daytime playtime action. Maybe you wonder about this, too!

We're excited to share that our official Big Giant Book website is live! After a long period of intermittent construction, our site is complete. Visit us at https://biggiantbook.com to take a peek!

Sunset

2023/5/22

13:40

Sam enjoys a quiet sunset on the balcony with his mom. They sit on  matching yellow chairs and share a cozy routine. Tonight, Sam studies the world around him and spots signs of change. His neighbor's playful puppy, his tomato plants,  and a spider's web are all growing - quickly! This leads to a gentle conversation about change.

In this sleepy tale, Joey revisits the musical melodies from Sam's first story (Seeds) but uses a slower tempo. He plays the mandolin throughout the story and highlights "tempo" after the tale.

Stick around for a slightly snoozy Silly Story at the end of today's episode!

This story features blocks as percussion (yay!) as well as some low, slow acoustic guitar. Joey discusses making beats with blocks and shares a rhythm to try at home!

Stick around for a Silly Story at the very end of this episode - this time, Joey helps Rachel with a couple portions of the story and it turns out even sillier than expected!

Mud Tea

2023/3/20

14:46

Today is the perfect day to make mud tea! Charlie, Clover, and Sasha work together to mix up some muddy springtime fun. They even set out a special spot for a chance visitor - anything is possible!

This story features a trio of saxophones (tenor, alto, and soprano), plus a sweet little kitchen-cupboard instrument. Joey discusses musical harmony and getting creative with finding sounds at home.

Rachel highlights the foundational drive to explore the world as play-based scientists, just like the trio of friends in “Mud Tea”. Mixing water and mud, transferring liquid from a kettle to teacups, and testing puddle depth with a stick are all fun ways to play with physics.

Stick around for a delightful Silly Story at the end of this episode! If your child would love a chance to fill in the blanks for next week’s Silly Story, please email their responses to sillystory@biggiantbook.com.

Raccoon at Noon

2023/3/13

11:15

It's noon, which means Raccoon should be fast asleep - but not today! The neighborhood is full of distractions. This 6-minute tale is packed with rhyme and rhythm and features drums and guitar.

Stick around after the story to meet the instruments with Joey! He chats with us about finding beats anywhere and everywhere. He recommends a great book: Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle.

We finished up today's episode with another Silly Story! If your child would love a chance to complete next week’s Silly Story, please email their responses to the address below!

Madeline Baker is busy helping her family prepare strawberry tarts for a royal celebration when she stumbles upon a magical, musical, melodious sound. What could it be?

Be sure to stick around to “Meet the Instruments” with Joey after the story. This story features mandolin (of course!) as well as enchanting chimes and sweet flute. Madeline even plays a couple homemade instruments - music is everywhere!

At the end of this episode, Rachel shares the very first, super official, rather silly “Silly Story” - be sure to check it out! If your child would love a chance to fill in the blanks for next week’s Silly Story, please email their responses to the address below!

Seeds

2023/2/27

It's STILL winter and summer sure feels far away.  Sam and his Auntie Amy embark on a little outing to get a jump-start on something fresh.

Stick around after the story to meet today's instrument: the mandolin! Joey talks about what makes the mandolin unique, thumps out a bit of bluegrass, and tries his hand at a little jester jingle.

PLUS, bonus! Extra! Something silly! Rachel has an announcement at the very end of the episode - so stay tuned!

That's Nothing

2023/2/20

18:55

Bunny Rabbit sets off on a lovely hop-around in the meadow near the river. Along the way, he pokes his paw. What’s worse, every critter he meets is in an awful mood! How will Bunny Rabbit turn this day around?

Stick around after the story to meet the instruments with Joey! This story features acoustic guitar, percussion, kalimba, and tenor saxophone. Joey focuses on the kalimba during today’s “Meet the Instruments” segment and describes its connection to the mbira, the national instrument of Zimbabwe.

This social-emotional story is meant to validate and encourage children in their understanding of themselves and others, while hopefully making them laugh along the way. Watch for future stories featuring Bunny Rabbit, Beaver, Trout, Goose, and Hummingbird!

This is the first story in our "Meadow" series.

The Cat Likes That

2023/2/12

07:56

This cozy story shares a glimpse into a (mostly!) quiet afternoon at Grandma’s house with her fluffy grey cat, Dustball.

Stay tuned after the story to meet the instruments: tenor saxophone and soprano saxophone! Joey answers a couple questions and offers some seriously silly advice. He recommends that we check out John Coltrane, an icon in saxophone history and music history.

Did you recognize Dustball from another story? That's right! She's the same cat who was slinking around outside in "The Acorn". Both stories are part of Big Giant Book's "Neighborhood" series.
