Hi friends, this episode is about our puppies experiencing their very first real snow! It happened last week, and at a year-and-a-half old it was their first chance to fall in love with an aspect of winter that everyone here at Foggy Oak Farm already adores. That is…if they can get over how scared they are of this mysterious white stuff falling from the sky! Let’s learn how Orion and Kristoff went from terrified to thrilled, with some help from their parents.

This week’s story an adaptation of a Grimm’s Fairy Tale called “The Fisherman and His Wife”, originally published in 1812. A fisherman catches a magic fish who begs him for its life. The fisherman spares the fish, but later returns to make a series of increasingly self-centered and greedy demands as his dissatisfaction grows, no matter how many wishes the fish grants.

This week we have another story about Ducklings! Towards the beginning of October, I found a surprise in the chicken coop. If you’ve been following the podcast for a while, you’ll remember that we have had a LOT of surprises in the chicken coop this year. This time, it was ducklings. We’re talking about our eight surprise fall ducklings and their habits – including their penchant for catching the zoomies as a group.

Hi friends, for the month of October we’re doing "Foggy Oak Scary Tales" to celebrate Halloween! These kid-friendly spooky stories are sure to give you a shiver of delight. Our first Foggy Oak Scary Tale comes from my mother, Kathy Krendl, about the time she and her parents conspired to make a haunted house surprise for her older sister and her friends. It was…the Spookiest Halloween Ever!

Have you heard the expression “follows you around like a duckling” before? This is a story about a time when we rescued and hatched seven wild mallard duck eggs and how we learned that, like domestic ducks, wild ducklings imprint on you when they are growing up, but unlike domestic ducks, they eventually yearn for and return to nature.

This week, we’re back with siblings Rowan and Rosalie as they work to complete the second of three tests to become honorary mermaids!
Last time, they were in the sunlight zone of the ocean and helped to save a baby otter who was in danger. Their kindness earned them green gold speckles all over their mermaid tails and the completion of one test!
This week, they are moving into the middle layer – the twilight zone – for their second test, when they encounter a ghost net – which is a fishing net that has been lost or abandoned at sea. It’s called a ghost net because it keeps catching fish and other sea creatures forever even though no one is in charge of it – it just haunts the water. Rowan and Rosalie have to save themselves and a hundred other animals who are trapped in the net.
A quick word of caution – everything comes out fine in the end, and we talk about this in kid-friendly ways, but these nets are a little sad and scary because of their impact on wildlife. They really are a huge problem in the oceans! You can skip this episode if you’d rather not learn about them.
You can listen to the first part of their story in the episode "Honorary Mermaids: The Sunlight Zone".

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a beloved place, animal, or thing is in need of a name. Or, well, if it’s not universally acknowledged at least a the practice has a long and illustrious history in both fiction and reality.
This week we are talking about names, specifically the names we give to places, creatures, and things we love.

This week we have a story about bringing fainting goats to Foggy Oak Farm! A couple of springs ago we brought home three fainting goats – a mom and her two babies. We learned that while they DO faint when they are startled or excited, it doesn’t stop them from running things. Let’s learn about these interesting ungulates, and how they went from the new kids on the block to the bosses of all the sheep and goats on the farm.

I imagine you’ve heard of fairies – magical creatures that live in the woods, and meadows, and and that’s what this story is about! Laurel is forbidden to go into the forest by her cottage after a woodcutter emerges claiming that fairies attacked him when he chopped down a tree.
All the grown ups are worried that the fairies are going to come after the village, too. When they refuse to try and talk to the fairies and try to make peace, Laurel decides to do it herself, and sets off an adventure to find the fairy ring in the forest and resolve the disagreement.

This week’s story is based on the Greek mythological prophet Cassandra. In this retelling, Cassandra is a sheep who was caught eating the flowers of a wizard. The wizard curses her in revenge! She will know bad things will happen in the future....but no one will believe her when she warns them!
Unlike the Greek myth, this one has a happy ending. Cassandra learns from her curse and, when it is removed, she is able to anticipate bad things that could happen and help her friends avoid them, even without the curse.

This week we have a story about Foggy Oak’s first dog, a brown and black hound dog mix named Brownie, who came to us after she was found running along the side of the road by relatives in Ohio. Brownie thought she should be everyone’s friend (or mother, if it was a baby animal) and could be counted on to sneak into your lap if you weren’t watching. Above all, Brownie was a runner. Let’s see if we can catch up with her in this week’s story...before she catches a donkey determined to stomp her!

This episode is about the first farm animals we had at the beginning of Foggy Oak Farm – Henrietta, a guineafowl who appeared mysteriously the day we took ownership of the farm; and Teddy, a rooster we quickly brought to the farm to give Henrietta a friend.
We’ll learn about the chicken’s lesser known cousin the guinea, how Henrietta and Teddy led us to quickly add more guineas and chickens, why you want to avoid mean roosters, and learn that friendship in its many forms is very much a treasure...even as it grows and changes over time.

This week, we have the conclusion to the current story of the would have been Cinderella who wasn’t – Fearless Susan, who so far has helped a troll with a sword stuck in its foot and rescued a dragon who was trapped under a boulder. She hasn’t felt scared yet, but she has picked up some new friends and special gifts – including the ability to talk to animals and monsters. She’s on her way with her horse Saoirse to the land of the sea queen to see if they can help deal with a kraken (a giant squid) who is breaking all the ships in the harbor.
I'm recovering from laryngitis which you may notice in the intro - just call me a little horse ;)!

This week, we have Part 2 of the would have been Cinderella who wasn’t – Fearless Susan – who set out into the world to learn about fear. She hasn’t felt scared yet, but she has helped a troll with a sword stuck in its foot and gained a new friend in the process. Susan is carrying some special gifts, including a magical, ancient ham that causes anyone who eats part of it to fall into a deep sleep. Why? We don’t know! Will it come in handy, do you think?
She’s on her way to try and figure out why a formerly friendly dragon is spewing fire and smoke at anyone who tries to come up to its cave on the mountain. Let’s join her now.

Hi friends! We are happy to be back with Season 3 of Foggy Oak Fairy Tales!
This week we have a story about magic, sheep, and laughter.
Shannon is a wonderful shepherd with the happiest, healthiest flock in all of Ireland. But she’s worried that someone might try to steal her lamb, whose wool feels like the softest fleece and shines like moonlight. So when the goddess Brigid and her ram Cirb offer to grant Shannon a wish...she knows just what to ask for. Her wish leads to a VERY sticky situation, a cure for a princess who cannot laugh, and a brighter future for her country.
Let’s find out how several classic fairy tale tropes come together for a fun filled sheep adventure!

This week’s story is based on an Aesop’s Fable called “The Bundle of Sticks”, which teaches us the age old lesson that “unity is strength”.
The forest animals are tired of being bossed around by the bullying Bear, who threatens to GOBBLE THEM UP if anyone tries to disagree with him. Can they find a way to work together and get bear to correct his bad behavior? Let’s find out!

Hi friends! This week’s story is an adaptation of the English Fairy Tale “My Own Self”, collected and edited in the volume “More English Fairy Tales” by Joseph Jacobs in 1922.
In this story, a young boy finds out that his wish of meeting a fairy might come true…but might not be wise to repeat!

Hi Friends! This week’s story is an adaptation of one of my favorite fairy tales – The Three Billy Goats Gruff! Three goats are desperate to cross a bridge to get to a lush green pasture, but a fearsome terrible troll lives there and gobbles up anything that tries to cross! Hi friends! This week’s story is about three hens with big personalities who recently rejoined us at Foggy Oak Farm...and the hijinks they have already gotten into.
Flock additions are always interesting, but perhaps never quite so much as for these hens who had never seen a rooster, let alone an entire farm full of animals!
Join me to find out how they are acclimating to their new life on the farm!
