The Farther Adventure - Home Again [S2:E13]

Bear King, Bobo Chico, Loar, and Roen enter the tunnel leading to the ‘other world.' Full of excitement, but not saying a word… further, further, and farther they advance.

Meanwhile, in the ‘other world’…the real world…Bear Queen, Lair Bear, Wander-the-Wizard, and Sacejis-the-Wise all gather in the Sky Cave. They share their own stories about having a dream about Bear King and Bobo Chico.  Gabarret-the-Squirrel arrives and tells her story about the dream they all seem to have shared. Sacejis-the-Wise interprets the dream about missing their husband, father, and friend.  When Bear Queen hears a familiar song, Bobo Chico and Bear King burst into the Sky Cave! After lots of questions and many answers, Bobo Chico provides the answer to the big question; what’s remained the same, and what’s different.

Meanwhile, halfway up Mt. Tabor, two brothers are on the front steps of their house on SE Hawthorne Street. “Mama! Dada! WE’RE HOME!” yelled Loar and Roen as they burst through their front door.

The Farther Adventure - Loar and Roen's Big Idea [S2:E12]

Previously, the Pirate Map revealed the secret passageway back to home, friends and family.  Excited to return, Bobo Chico sings a song “When I Get Home” about all the little things he’s going to enjoy. The pathway leads to the Great River of Wonderland. On the far shore, they see the door guarding the tunnel through the mountain. That's the way to the ‘other world’ that keeps Wonderland safe from the ‘others’. The four friends must get across the rushing river. But when Bear King urges them to join him on a large log, Bobo Chico isn’t convinced that strategy will work. He turns to Loar and Roen for advice. The brothers scour the area and Roen finds a Chock-full o'Nuts coffee can perched on a pedestal! Puzzled, he gives it a little shake. A swirling cloud reveals Rufus Goofus, Wizard 2nd Class who is eager to meet Bear King because the King of Bears has magical powers. But when Bear King explains that his powers are greatly limited in Wonderland, Rufus Goofus becomes determined to help with half-baked ideas. Disheartened, Bear King and Bobo Chico turn to Loar and Roen.  Loar has a brainstorm, remembering the big swing set back home at the Mt. Tabor playground in SE Portland.  With Rufus Goofus’s help, they make a rope swing to carry them one-by-one across the river. 

When they all safely reach the other side of the river, they wave goodbye to Rufus Goofus (now Wizard 1st Class). Bear King turns to Loar and Roen. “Sometimes the greatest magic happens between your ears!”  Bobo Chico looks on in amazement and asks, “Huh? What’s between your ears Bear King?” Smiling at his young otter friend, he says one word. "Imagination!”

The Farther Adventure - Spinning Yarns and Webs [S2:E11]

Cart Benright warns Bear King that they’ll be heading into a region that was used by pirates. He’s concerned about a possible dangerous portion of the pathway known as the pirate bridge.  Loar and Roen are both excited and nervous to go into ‘pirate country’ and are hoping they might find treasure.  Bear King tries to calm their fears by saying nobody would dare mess with a ‘tried and true’, brave warrior!  Bobo Chico is relieved to hear Bear King’s expression of bravery and courage but wonders if he’s relying too much on his past glories. Bear King leads them down the mountain while singing a song of past battles fought and won (over bees and jars of honey).  When they come to the pirate bridge, he urges the others to wait while he inspects the bridge.  At the mid-span, the ancient wood boards and rusty cables cannot withstand his bountiful weight, and they start to groan, creak, and crack.  Bobo Chico quickly realizes the King of Bears is facing a great peril, and looking frantically around notices a large spider.  He strikes up a conversation with ‘Darwin’, the Bark Spider, and learns that he was rebuffed from fixing the bridge years ago by the pirates.  Roen has a brainstorm and strikes a deal with Darwin.  With Darwin’s help the bridge is fixed and Bear King is saved from certain death.  Darwin leads the group to the pirate’s treasure chest, but they cannot read the pirate map. But it's Loar and Roen who realize that the treasure map was written backwards!  With this new information, they learn they can find their way back home! They celebrate by singing a pirate song.

The Farther Adventure - Saving Bear King [S2:E10]

After a couple of days rest in Treemania, the four friends are ready for the next leg of their journey. Bobo Chico’s ankle is much better and they’re eager to get back onto the pathway, riding on electric scooters. They journey through meadows of colorful orange poppies and Loar begins a song about his favorite things with Roen joining him.  They come to a large lake, with a sailboat ready to carry them across.  Their destination is the Ponderosa Lodge, on the other side of the lake. Bear King assumes the role of ‘skipper,’ even though Bobo Chico is the more experienced sailor, and they sail off across the lake. But when the wind grows too strong, Roen asks Bobo Chico if it’s getting dangerous.  Bobo Chico loyally says, “Bear King is the captain of the ship, and we must obey his orders!”  Loar spies some large rocks downwind and tries to alert Bear King.  But Bear King is distracted. Loar calls out to Bobo Chico for help, but Bobo Chico is too conflicted about correcting his best friend.  At the crucial moment, Loar yells at the top of his lungs, “BEAR KING!” which immediately gets Bear King’s attention. Disaster is averted and the boat tacks away from danger. Later that night, as they’re enjoying hot cocoa by the roaring fire inside the lodge, Bear King toasts brave Loar and gives him a big hug!  Bobo Chico breaks into a sailing song about facing high winds, crashing waves, and brave sailors.

The Farther Adventure - Loar Gets into a Pickle [S2:E9]

The four friends in the Dragon Boat finish their water travel when they arrive at the dock with the ‘Farther Adventures Await’ sign.  After a brief lunch, they continue their journey back on the pathway. All use mountain bikes, but Bobo Chico sprints ahead with Loar closely following him. Bobo Chico inspires young Loar with a song about being an adventurous, daring, daredevil. At the summit, Bobo Chico chooses to go ‘off road’, and Loar is conflicted about whether to follow him.  When he does, he quickly gets in serious trouble. As Bobo Chico is about to change his direction and get back on the path, Loar comes flying by on his mountain bike…out of control! He miraculously is caught by a tree branch, but in grave danger of falling into the canyon and river below. A crow sees the danger and flies off to find Bear King, Roen and Bear King arrive to the scene. Bear King asks a ‘riot of crows’ to lift Loar out of danger and carry him to  Treemania. Roen leads the way to Treemania with its unique and beautiful treehouses. They enjoy dinner and Loar tells Bobo Chico he only wants to eat pickles, not get into a ‘pickle’ of danger. Bear King and the crows erupt in laughter!

The Farther Adventure - Bobo Chico's New Friend [S2:E8]

Heading away from Clumenji and the Wizard of the Desert’s wonderful El Castillo Encantado, the four friends merrily follow the pathway toward the Great River of Wonderland. They paddle down the river in a Dragon Boat, enter a great canyon, and marvel at its rugged beauty. After an exciting journey through the rapids, they take a midday break. The brothers and Bear King enjoy a well-deserved nap, but Bobo Chico is too curious to sleep and goes in search of food. While picking some fruit, he’s startled and scared by a curious coyote and he twists his ankle. However, Bobo Chico learns that the coyote is also scared of his shadow. In spite of his own injury, Bobo Chico naturally wants to help the coyote. And when the coyote sees that Bobo Chico is friendly and hurt, he introduces himself as ‘Kyle’. Bobo Chico can help Kyle overcome his fear, but he’s going to need help getting back to the Dragon Boat. Kyle races to the boat and convinces Bear King to come and help Bobo Chico.  Bobo Chico, in turn, asks Bear King to help Kyle with his problem, which he does by making up a song about self-awareness and friendship. As the full moon comes up over the hills, they all hear the howls of coyotes and see a solitary figure framed by the moonlight. Kyle is now one of the pack amongst his friends.

The Farther Adventure - Bobo Chico's Birthday Wish S2:E7]

The four friends find themselves in the enchanted castle of Clumenji, the Wizard of the Desert.  Situated among the colorful rocky cliffs, El Castillo Encantado  has wonderful pools with slides.  As the brothers awake, they learn from Bobo Chico that it’s his birthday! A day of revelry ensues, at Bobo Chico’s birthday party they all meet a special friend, Gary the Dragon, who lives under Clumenji’s pool. At the same time, back home in Portland, Bear Queen, Lair Bear, and Gabarret the Squirrel want to celebrate Bobo Chico’s birthday, too.  Bear Queen comes up with a unique way to connect with Bobo Chico, even though he’s off in Wonderland far, far, away!

The Farther Adventure - The Desert Wizard [S2:E6]

The four friends' journey continues in the high elevation of the Forest of Wonder. But as they follow the path downward, they soon encounter a different landscape of chaparral, vast flat plains, abundant yucca trees, and giant cactus (saguaro). Loar and Roen are surprised and amazed at this new landscape, but it heightens their sense of being far from the lush forests of home. When the friends come to a canyon, they wonder how they can cross the rushing river below. Bear King is not sure he can climb down the steep path, even though Bobo Chico is eager to scramble downhill. Loar is sensitive to Bear King’s dilemma and suggests that he and Roen explore the nearby area for a safer alternative. But when the boys separate from the group, they get lost and encounter Clumenji, the Desert Wizard. He gives them a ride in his magic red electric cart back to Bear King and Bobo Chico. With the combined magic of Clumenji and Bear King, a bridge appears and they all cross the canyon.  They soon reach Clumenji’s adobe hacienda, a delightful palace of red rock, amongst desert spires.

The Farther Adventure - Friends of the Forest [S2:E5]

Thanks to Lyrie, the four friends are safe, sound, and well-fed on the Isla de Amigos. After a good night’s sleep, the friends are ready to continue their quest. Lyrie explains that the pathway will lead away from the ocean and eventually take them to an immense forest. Undaunted, Bear King helps the group move confidently onward. Initially, Bobo Chico is excited to go into a forest again but grows hesitant as it's unfamiliar to him.  Loar and Roen, now secure in their bond as brothers, are willing to trust Bear King and are eager to move forward. But as the day ends, they realize they’re going to need food and shelter. Coming up with an inspiration, Bear King turns to Bobo Chico for his help. Bobo Chico loses his fear and becomes happy with his special knowledge of the forest. He helps them find food and make a comfortable shelter in the forest. They all realize the gifts of nature when they stop to ask for each other’s help.

The Farther Adventure - Brotherly Love [S2:E4]

Thanks to Slogadu, Bear King and Bobo Chico with Loar and Roen head down the new pathway which leads eventually home. As they wind their way out of the mountains of Wonderland, they come out to a beautiful, calm ocean. Hiking along the coastal path, kept cool by ocean breezes and swaying palm trees, Roen becomes frustrated by Loar’s subtle put-downs, and sometimes not being supportive. Crossing a lagoon over a rope suspension bridge, Bobo Chico reminds Loar to ‘mind the gaps,' which he doesn’t.  Without meaning to, Roen lets a branch fly back, hitting Loar, who stumbles.  Losing his balance, he trips and falls off the bridge and splashes into the lagoon, becoming understandably upset.  But he’s rescued by a young sea kayak guide, Lyrie. Scooping Loar up into her sea kayak, she paddles to shore. There she helps Loar, and Roen, understand that sometimes siblings have difficulties, but that they’re also bonded by blood and love.

The Farther Adventure - Lost and a Pathway Home [S2:E3]

In this children's podcast, Bear King meets Slogadu, the magical and mystical man of the mountain, who witnessed the arrival of the four friends into Wonderland. Slogadu has an idea of how they could find their way home, but it’ll be a difficult journey. Meanwhile, back home in the Real World, Wander the Wizard meets with Bear Queen and Sacejis the Wise.  Although they’re worried about the four friends, they’re sure that Bear King will take good care of them. Wander the Wizard isn’t sure his magic powers are strong enough and Bear Queen isn’t sure her love for Bear King can overcome this challenging situation. But Sacejis the Wise has a suggestion for all of them to join hands and bring their collective powers together to telepathically connect with Bear King and Bobo Chico. 

Back in Wonderland, Slogadu greets the four friends, and when they all hold hands, they feel the loving presence of their family and friends back home!

The Farther Adventure - Over the Rainbow [S2:E2]

The four friends travel to a new place over the rainbow and through an electrical storm.  Finding Wonderland to be beautiful beyond belief, they soon realize that they will eventually need to find their way back home. But how? As they climb out of the balloon, Bear King mistakenly deflates it and it disappears in a ‘poof’ of pink.  Initially, Bobo Chico is very excited by this magical place where fountains bubble with sparkling, flavored water and bushes sport ice cream sandwiches. Loar and Roen marvel at trees with tasty cracker-like leaves and chocolate chip cookies that hang like fruit. But after their initial delight, Bobo Chico becomes very worried that they may never find their way home. To ‘see what he could see,’ Bear King hiked up a mountain, where he is startled to meet the mystical magical man, Slogadu.

The Farther Adventure - Wonderland [S2:E1]

This children’s podcast is a continuation of Season 1, Episode 13 that brought together all the friends at a party. This new series, The Farther Adventures of Bear King and Bobo Chico, begins as Bear King and Bobo Chico get lost in the balloon as it floats away from Portland. At the same time, back in Portland’s South Waterfront, Loar and Roen discover Bear King’s backpack under the picnic table. Looking inside, they see Bear King’s magic wand but are nervous about touching it. Startled by Carl the Crow, Loar coincidently utters a magic phrase…and ‘poof!’ both boys are transported into the balloon.  While Bear King and Bobo Chico are delighted to see the boys, they are concerned about how they will all get back home. When the balloon passes through a cloud, an electric disturbance transmits them all into a wonderous, fantastic place, over the rainbow into Wonderland!

The Adventure of the Flying Balloon [S1:E13]

Unable to direct the balloon, the two friends are carried eastward towards the mountains. As they pass Mt. Hood, Bobo Chico marvels at the beautiful landscape and Bear King realizes another adventure is about to begin with his best friend.

The Adventure of the Wild, But Friendly, Cheetahs [S1:E12]

This children's podcast is about miscommunication that turns out OK in the end. Bobo Chico receives a note and image from Leadranssa, the Wood Elf who lives in an elf watchtower in Sherwood Forest. He and Bear King drive through a snowstorm and search for her home at the bottom of the hill and under the bridge. Loar and Roen, wearing their Cheetah coats, also receive a message to meet in Sherwood Forest. As Leadranssa watches, and calls from the top of the hill, Bear King and Bobo Chico circle the hill ― as Loar and Roen do the same. When Bear King confronts the "wild cheetahs," he learns they are actually Loar and Roen. While celebrating with Leadranssa in her watchtower, she corrects Bobo Chico’s misinterpterion of her message.

The Adventure of the Snow Palace [S1:E11]

This children's podcast is about being helpful to others. Bobo Chico is excited for the first snow day. Bear King gives him a lift in his snow cart up to Mt. Tabor. Meeting Loar and Roen they enjoy a morning of sledding. After lunch they decide to build a snow palace. The structure is admired by Polly Wanacracker and her dog Trouble. After chasing a squirrel, the dog loses a bootie. Roen, Loar, and Bobo Chico trace the lady’s and dog’s tracks to her house, where after bring firewood into her house she thanks them with hot cocoa. Bear King rewards the boys' good deeds by (temporarily) making snow bikes for Loar and Roen.

The Adventure of the Loud Crows [S1:E10]

He meets Carl the Crow, and is rescued by Thorondor, Lord of the Eagles. In the morning while sailing after breakfast, Loar sees the eyrie just where Thorondor said it would be!

Disaster is avoided when Pete the Pirate is summoned by Carl the Crow, and thanks to Squawk the Parrot, agrees to sail the Princesses back home to LaLaLand.

The Adventure of the Broken Crown [S1:E4]

The Adventure of the Flying Cap [S1:E3]

In this children's podcast, Bear King and Bobo Chico are invited to fly in Pilot Patty’s small plane. Bobo Chico’s blue cap flies out the window and lands on a big rock in the Sandy River. They meet Loar and Roen by the river and Ranger Agua guides the cap’s retrieval. Thanks to the brave Loar, the cap is saved, and they all celebrate with ice cream at the Sugar Pine Drive In.

The Adventure of the Tidal Pools [S3:E1]

Bear King and Bobo Chico meet up with Loar and Roen’s bus when they arrive at Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve on the Oregon Coast and help them along the Captain Cook Trail down to the tidal pools. While they’re exploring the tidal creatures at low tide ― learning a LOT from the Reserve’s Marine Biologist ― Bobo Chico becomes distracted. Leaving the safety of the group, he clambers over a rock ledge and discovers an opening. Believing it’s a cave with pirate treasure, he trips and falls, bonking his head. Loar and Roar wonder what happened to Bobo Chico. Bear King organizes the search party. They rescue Bobo Chico just before the sea horn fills with water, as the tide comes in.

The Adventure to Japan [S3:E2]

Bear King, Bobo Chico, Loar, and Roar are arriving at Narita Airport in Japan. The boys are excited, but have trepidations about traveling in a strange land. The hosts greet and guide them through the airport to the rail line to Tokyo. Bobo Chico is confident (overly so) that his smartphone will navigate all language, trip, and map challenges. However, he loses this phone on the train and doesn’t discover it's lost until he really needs it. Bobo Chico becomes flustered, rude, and selfish about his own needs. With Loar and Roen’s help, Bear King uses his diplomatic good manners to seek out help. At their hotel, Bear King works with the local authorities to find Bobo Chico’s phone. They celebrate with their new friends at a local ramen noodle restaurant, where Loar and Roen are presented with special Japanese ‘robes.’

The Adventure of the Bridge Over Troubled Waters [S3:E3]

Loar and Roen are merrily playing with their Legos, making a complex series of buildings, bridges, and vehicles that crisscross their ’world.’ When Bear King & Bobo Chico visit, they are impressed with the boys' work. Bear King takes a call from Ana, his civil engineer friend, and learns a disaster has destroyed an old bridge, which threatens to impact a sensitive river wetland area. When they all see images of the disaster, Bobo Chico is genuinely concerned. He is very familiar with the area, as well as the network of bike paths people need to use the bridge. Bear King asks the boys to share their ideas with his civil engineer friend.  Ana loves the ideas and asks to use them to help restore the bridge.

The Adventure of Robi, The Friendly Robot [S3:E4]

Loar and Roen come to the Sky Cave to help Bear King understand how to use the self-parking feature on his FUV.  Baer King explains how he dented his vehicle at the grocery store when Bobo Chico confused him…which Bobo Chico claims wasn’t his fault. Roen says he’d like to have a robot help him do his chores, which inspires Bear King to connect with his friend, a robotics engineer. The four friends get a special visit to the lab and learn that the engineer would like to test her prototype, ‘Robi,’ at Bear King’s home. Bobo Chico is suspicious of Robi and is afraid of the test. Hilarity ensues, and Robi saves Bobo Chico from getting hurt.

The Adventure of Navigating with the Stars [S3:E5]

Bear King and Bobo Chico have picked up Loar and Roen whoare vacationing with their family in Black Butte. Wearing their space explorer costumes and helmets, the boys are eager to see the Dee Wright Observatory. They travel up the Old McKenzie Highway (OR 242) high into the Cascade Mountains and reach the lava rock structure at the McKenzie Summit. Since it’s summer, it doesn’t get dark until later in the evening. While Loar knows quite a bit about stars, Bobo Chico asks Bear King to explain how humans and animals use the stars to navigate and about mythology (which Loar rejects). Bear King explains Greek, Norse, and Native American mythology. In the dark, as they climb back to the FUV, Loar leaves the group rudely and gets lost. Roen is very concerned about his lost brother. But Loar ‘finds his way’ using Polaris, the North Star and finally realizes he needs his family and friends.

The nature that was sacrificed by industrial development now needs to be restored to save all living creatures − humans and other species. Bobo Chico and Bear King know this first-hand. They also know that family ties can become strained, need to be nurtured, and at times, restored. Bobo Chico brings his friends back to his ancestorial land, the Columbia Slough. He shares his family history and recommends how they can all help restore the Slough to be a healthy place for otters and others. Bobo Chico also helps Loar restore his relationship with his younger brother Roen. And then they all help save Bear King from a dangerous situation, restoring his safety and health.

The Adventure of the Tillamook Forest

Bear King and Bobo Chico are helping repair the trails near the Tillamook Forest Visitor Center and are looking forward to Loar and Roen’s school field trip there.  Loar and Roen are riding to the center on their school charter bus.  Loar is eager to use his magnifying glass but another boy wants to use it to burn insects.  The boys explore the Center with their class and then meet up with Bear King and Bobo Chico.  Loar and Roen share some of their discoveries in the center. The highlight is climbing the Forest Watch Tower. They all cross the suspension bridge and have their lunch in the meadow on the trail to the Wilson River overlook. Loar’s magnifying glass accidentally starts a small fire and Roen puts it out with his canteen. With the crisis averted, the boys are recognized for their keen interests and quick instincts to protect the forest.

The Adventure of the Casa de Nueces [S3:E9]

Bear King is riding his e-bike over the Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People. But when the wind blows his cap off his head, it sails into the Willamette River. “Ah nuts!” he exclaims in disgust. As he stands at the belvedere watching his hat float downriver, Loar & Roen come riding up on their bikes. When he points to his cap floating in the river, Loar yells to Bobo Chico to retrieve it as he sails upriver. They rendezvous at the Zidell Yards- Aquatic Center boat dock. Then ride to the South Waterfront Farmers Market and meet Pedro, owner of Granja de Arañas Labradoras. He invites them to visit his farm near Halsey, Oregon, which they do. There, they learn about all the wonderful produce, crops, and food grown in the Willamette Valley and all across Oregon, and how it feeds locals and folks around the world.  Loar & Roen are confused about hazelnuts vs filberts, which Pedro explains. He then awards Bear King with a new La Casa de Nueces cap!

The Adventure of the Tall Tower [S3:E10]

Through the fun activity of making a temporary playhouse out of cardboard, Loar and Roen are exposed to the wider world of designing and building. Bear King and Bobo Chico ask Wander the Wizard to share with the boys how houses and housing are designed. Inspired by their curiosity, Wander the Wizard reaches out to his friend who is building a tall apartment tower in Portland and asks him for a tour. The boys are delighted to wear safety vests and hard hats and to meet the project’s Safety Officer. He guides the four friends through the building. Loar and Roen ask how they could learn how to become architects, builders, or engineers. They learn about Saturday Academy, and mentoring in high school through the architecture, Engineering, and Construction (ACE) program. When they leave, Roan asks if he can have a safety notice to put on his cardboard structure. Laughter ensues.

The Adventure of Boats on the Water [S3:E11]

While sailing in Bobo Chico‘s catamaran, Bear King, Loar, and Roen learn that there are rules for boater safety. As they navigate the river they see many kinds of boats: canoes to tugboats, jetboats to jet skis, barges to sailboats, paddle-wheelers to paddleboards. Bear King asks the boys to guess what activity each boat is designed for and its purpose.  Later in the day, they come to the rescue of an elderly couple who are having difficulty navigating their kayak across the rough, choppy water of the river.

The Adventure of the Misunderstood Snake [S3:E12]

Are snakes really mean?  The four friends venture to Central Oregon and explore the Newberry Crater National Monument -- the Lava Cast Forest in particular. They bring Robi-the-Robot to assist them, and ‘he’ ends up greatly helping them. A startled snake (‘Rattle’) reacts to Loar and Bobo Chico, warning and then scaring them with its presence. In his haste to escape, Loar falls and badly hurts his ankle.  Robi helps to ‘protect’ them from the misunderstood ‘Rattle’ and then helps his human friends recover. Bobo Chico provides tender, loving care to his young friend as Bear King gently puts Roen to bed.

The Adventure of Past Futures [S3:E13]

While on a trip to Northeastern Oregon, during the last week before a new school year, Bobo Chico shares the story of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, the Missoula Floods, and how the first people came to the Pacific Northwest.  Bear King brings them all to the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute. It's a museum and research institute located on the Umatilla Indian Reservation near Pendleton, Oregon, and it's the only Native American museum along the Oregon Trail. There the brothers learn how stories are the way the people learn about their culture from their elders. Back home, Bear King and the boys share an emotional goodbye.  Bear King and Bobo Chico head down their final path together.
