The Apple Seed Presents: The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde

2022/12/29

52:50

Oscar Wilde's classic ghost story The Canterville Ghost from 1887 is about a fearsome ghost named Simon de Canterville who has haunted an ancient English castle and terrified the locals for centuries. However, he is flummoxed by the castle's newest owners: a family of Americans who don't seem to be frightened of him. The story has been adapted into several of movies and TV shows over the years, including a recent Emmy-winning four-part series made by our sister network BYUtv in partnership with the BBC. The new series places the story in modern times, so today on the show we thought it would be fun to go back to Wilde's original text. So sit back and enjoy as host Sam Payne shares the spooky, witty, and ultimately redemptive story. You can stream BYUtv's updated take on The Canterville Ghost for free at https://www.byutv.org/canterville-ghost

(30:16) "Girl from Riverton" by Sam Payne: There are many milestones that we go through as we get older. One that we most commonly experience as a teenage is our first dance with that special person we've had our eye on. In Sam's case, this experience had kept him past his curfew. When he met a girl at a church dance, he just lost track of the time, and found himself in an awkward encounter with his dad. Later on down the road, Sam has learned to see that story from a new point of view, and wrote this song to tell it. (37:14) "Borrowing the Car" by Bill Harley: This short story from Bill Harley shows the unique relationship parents and teenagers can have with one another when it comes to curfew. As frustrating as it may be, parents are usually set these boundaries out of a love and worry for their children. When Bill's son didn't come home on time, Bill thought of a response that would help teach his son to come home by curfew from then on. (40:31) "The Cow That Ate The Piper" by Bill Harley: In this traditional Scottish tale, Bill Harley tells the story of a man named Willy McPhee, who is a piper. Change My Mind

2022/2/3

56:50

Have you ever seen a meme or a booth that says, “Change my mind?” Perhaps, “The Star Wars Prequels are the best. Change my mind,” or, “It's a crime to wear socks to bed. Change my mind.” Point being: we daily encounter strong opinions, or may face the firm opposition of, “Change my mind.” Perhaps we are even the one who feels that way! Today’s collection of stories explores ways in which people change their minds. Storytellers Kevin Carr, Joan Stockbridge, and Syd Lieberman persuade us to think in new ways, and to discover truths that humility might teach us. But one thing is for sure: The Apple Seed is the best. Change my mind. Healing Hands

2022/2/2

56:49

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we’ve been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. The healing power of love is a very important factor in many stories. Throughout life, we aim to take care of ourselves as well as those around us. Mothers and fathers take care of children, neighbors and friends help each other socially, and many professionals like doctors, social workers, law enforcement officers, teachers, and many others all provide necessary service for those around them. In this episode we will see the explanation of some beautiful acts of service for oneself as well as others. It is important to think about how we can better serve not only ourselves, but those around us as we grow older and learn more about life. Let these stories -although lighthearted and jovial- be a lesson to how we can understand and help one another even through treacherous times. On today's episode, enjoy the following: "The Mollusk's Tale" by Bob Reiser from Foibles and Fiddlesticks: Fables for Grownups (2:03) The Daily Mix: "Leilani of the Distant Sea" with Rachel Wadham (11:53) "The Light Princess" by Danielle Bellone from Moon-Eyed Sister (21:10) Radio Family Journal : "Canada" by Sam Payne (51:00)

A Promise Worth Keeping

2022/1/20

56:50

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we’ve been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. Many people view promises in many different ways. In many a cowboy movie, a simple handshake was enough to seal an agreement in stone. Spy movies, on the other hand, hold many empty promises, betrayals, and treachery. Ideally, everyone would keep their promises, but that’s unfortunately not the case. That’s why we have to sign documents when we promise to pay back a loan, or to seal a contract of any kind. The sad reality is that some people have no intention of keeping their promises, even while making them. There are some promises, however, that should never be broken because the consequences would simply be too great. We have some stories about broken promises today, along with many others from tellers like Bil Lepp, Dan Keding, and more. On today’s episode, enjoy the following: “The Banjo Player of Franceville” by Dan Keding from Promises Kept, Promises Broken (4:46) The Daily Mix: “Turn to Stone” with Mark Wait (18:04) “Kate Crackernuts” by Mary Hamilton from Sisters All...And One Troll (26:39) “The King of Little Things” by Bil Lepp from King of Little Things (47:05)

Hooves of the Horses

2022/1/19

56:50

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we’ve been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. Today we're talking about horses! Horses have been a key player in history, in western migration, in poetry, and in storytelling. Songs, short stories, novels and poems have centered around the ‘Cowboy’ and their horse for a long time. Many folktales and songs have been connected to life through the vision of a horse. There is always something new to be learned- whether it’s through hearing about one’s connection to their horse, some of the tales behind the hope that horses carry on their backs, or just a funny tale involving the majestic beasts. So let us all sit down together and learn something new, feel the wind on our face, and imagine the freedom that horses and the love of land and animals can bring. S2 E39: Storyteller Antonio Sacre + 'The Kiss Bet' author Ingrid Ochoa

2022/11/10

52:50

Stories come in all shapes and sizes, and they come from tellers of all kinds. Today we have stories told in different ways: through words, through artwork, and through song. Each story is unique in how it is told and what we can learn from it. On this podcast episode of The Apple Seed, we bring you stories from Antonio Sacre, our own host Sam Payne, and a new kind of story from web artist Ingrid Ochoa. We hope these different kinds of stories spark memories that you can turn into stories to share with the people that you love. (3:50) "How Not to Tell Stories to Your Own Kids" by Antonio Sacre: As ironic as it may seem, Antonio Sacre tells a story about how he could not find a way to tell stories to his own children. After telling them every story he could think of, he eventually turned to telling them fairytales. But not just any fairytales--the original Grimm fairytales. As Antonio told these stories to his children, he quickly learned that they were not the stories he expected them to be. We hope you enjoy this story from Antonio Sacre, recorded live in the Apple Seed studio with our live studio audience. (23:19) Radio Family Journal by Sam Payne: Sam shares a childhood memory of an iconic TV moment: Big Bird learning about Mr. Hooper's death on Sesame Street. Rather than avoid the situation, the Sesame Street writers decided to face it head on and share the news with the children of the world. Sometimes hard things happen in life which can make them hard to confront, but this episode of Sesame Street teaches us that sometimes it's best to talk about them and share our understanding with one another. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. You’ve probably heard the saying “Nobody’s perfect”. This is certainly true for us in real life, but it is also true of a lot of our favorite characters. If Nemo from "Finding Nemo" hadn’t touched the boat, Marlon never would have left the reef. If Ebenezer Scrooge from "A Christmas Carol" hadn’t been so miserly, he wouldn’t have had to go on the journey with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. It’s important to experience the world, to see the sights, and to meet new people. As we do, we become more cultured and able to connect with others. As we connect with others we can make the world a better place, and even better to experience. There are times when traveling isn’t an option, of course, so experiencing the world can be done in different ways. We believe, here at The Apple Seed, that one of the best ways is through stories. The whole world has stories to share, and we want to hear them all. Every story can bring new experiences to new people, and new connections between them. Being tricked can be a pleasant or an unpleasant experience. For example, have you ever had a surprise party thrown in your honor? That can be a pleasant trick. Or if someone tricks you into thinking you’re not getting the birthday gift you want, but lo and behold, you did get it. That’s also pleasant. But a lot of tricks can be unpleasant too. Maybe a monster plays dead and tricks you into coming near only to gobble you up. Or maybe someone asks to borrow money with no intention of ever paying you back. That’s pretty nasty. Maybe someone bonks you on the head to escape the punishment for their crimes. All of these unpleasant tricks actually take place in today’s episode.
