The Nightingale

2022/4/8

13:43

This beautiful story set in the empire of China was actually written by the famous Danish children's writer Hans Christian Andersen. It first appeared in a book in 1843- and that's a very long time ago indeed! Some people say that the story was about a young lady Andersen had fallen in love with, a famous singer at the time whose voice was as sweet as that of a nightingale! The nightingale is a small brown bird and looks very like a thrush- some might say that the nightingale looks plain compared to other birds that have bright colours and shiny feathers! But the songs that the nightingale sings and its beautiful voice are one of the most beautiful sounds to be heard on earth! So the next time you see a little brown bird hopping around the garden- ask it to sing for you-it might just be our marvelous little nightingale!

The Nightingale is the national bird of Ukraine.

The Three Bears

2022/4/1

10:06

We are back with this gorgeous classic tale with a twist. Well, I say with a twist but it may have been the later version of this tale that had a twist, as this is probably the original version of the story, originating in England in the 19th Century! We will all know the version of this story that introduced us to Goldilocks, the seemingly innocent young girl who stumbles upon the bear's house in the woods, but I think the original is much more entertaining, as a naughty old lady is the one who intrudes into the bear's house, and they are none too happy with the results! I think this version is so much more entertaining and witty, and the character of the old lady is mischievous and mysterious, and what happens to her in the end - well, you'll have to listen and see!

Thank you so much for listening and if you like this story please do share it with a friend!

The Little White Mitten

2022/3/27

09:03

This week we bring you a very special story from the nation of Ukraine.

This retelling of the popular Ukrainian children's story is in my own words and takes its lead from the wonderful 1989 version of the story from Jan Brett but some of the written records of The Mitten date back to the 19th century and include the folklore collections of Pavlo Chubynsky. A little boy loses his brand new mitten in the white snow and a succession of increasingly larger animals comically squeeze their way in to take advantage of the warmth. Will Nicki ever find his new mitten again, and if he does, what surprises will he find inside?!

This story is dedicated to the people of the sovereign nation of Ukraine.

The Lute Player

2022/3/10

12:38

This week is very special! In honour of international women's day, we bring you a story specially chosen for reflecting the power of women! Many stories about kings and queens often see the woman as a background character, if not some type of wicked stepmother! But today's story is about a wise and resourceful queen who defies the king's orders in order to save both his life and the future of their kingdom! Her quick wit and resourcefulness save the day, she is not a hero because of her beauty or her status, she is a hero because she follows her heart and does what she believes to be right. This is dedicated to all the women who have inspired me throughout my journey so far, with much love.x.

The Hedley Goblin!

2022/3/3

10:06

Did you know that in a place called Hedley in the North of England, for many many years, people reported that there was a mischievous and tricky little elf who went about the place causing all sorts of trouble! he was known as the Hedley goblin and this story tells us about a kind and cheerful lady who happens to bump into him one day! The story is gorgeous for many reasons, and very funny, but what stands out to me most is the moral tale reflected through the good lady. She reacts to each conundrum with gratitude and grace, and at the end of the day, makes herself a good friend instead of an enemy, much to a certain goblin's surprise. It is a useful lesson in resilience and gratitude, told through the story of two most unlikely companions.

Ps, this story is very old and was originally called the Hedley Kow. Kow (it's spoken like Koooooo!) is an old word for sprite or elf, and for ease of understanding here I changed it to goblin, it first appeared in a beautiful book of fairy tales collected by the Australian folklorist Joseph Jacobs.

Jason and the Golden Fleece!

2022/2/18

19:05

We are back with another classic and it's fantastic! Full of action and adventure, this one is a wee bit longer also, and perfect for smallies who love a brave and daring hero! It always amazes me just how long these stories have survived and transformed, and again and again, we look back to ancient Greece for some of the best stories ever told! This is most definitely one of them and we hope you enjoy it!

Big Mouth and the Giant

2022/2/4

08:24

I have said this before and I'm sure I'll say it again, but I think this is my favourite story so far. Sometimes you just come across a gem, and although I can't find exactly where this story originated, I know that it's an old one and has reappeared in many forms! I actually giggled while recording it and left it in because if it can make me laugh then it may just have a chance with the kids- we all know they are the most discerning of audiences! Thanks so much for listening, and I hope you giggle too!

Sleeping Beauty

2022/1/22

19:00

We are back after a short break, and thank you so much for bearing with us! Well, what can we say about this tale, it speaks for itself! As you know, we dont usually go in for the Prince/Princess dialogue here at land of nod, its often unfair to women and men alike! But this version puts much more emphasis on other elements of the story, which are really rather beautiful! The help that Beauty receives is much more about the 7 fairies, or guardian spirits, that come into her life, and in my view the real hero of the story is the 7th fairy, who is smart enough to find a work around the dark spell cast on Beauty. Also, as a kid, I was fascinated by this movie and by the image of the castle and all its inhabitants being held in space and time with Beauty, for one hundred years, suspended by a magic spell and invisible to everyone else! We really hope you enjoy this tale as much as we did!

The Sword in the Stone!

2021/12/16

09:44

Here is another well-loved tale that I hadn't heard in years, and rediscovering it was a joy! This classic has its roots in Excalibur, the name given to the sword of King Arthur! The story goes that as a boy, Arthur alone was able to draw the sword out of a stone in which it had been magically fixed. A book called Merlin, written all the way back in 1200 was the first to mention the "sword in the stone" . In another version of the story, it is said the sword was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake - and upon his death in battle, a hand reached out of the lake to take back the sword that had kept him safe all through the years - Maybe sometime soon we can hear that story too!

The Little Bat

2021/10/25

12:00

It's almost Halloween and here at Land of Nod its one of our favourite times of the year! Here in Ireland, the weather is crisp and dry and all the leaves are falling from the trees! As the nights get darker and longer, it's the perfect time of year to hear a story about creatures who spend almost all of their lives in the dark- because it's where they feel most at home! The little bat in our story today just doesn't want to go to bed! He has been out hunting with his family all night and just when he should be curling up with his siblings in their cosy cave, he begins to feel very adventurous indeed! Find out what happens when this little fellow ignores good advice and strikes out on his own- how will he fare in the daylight!? This gorgeous little yales wraps up season 4 of storytelling here at the Land of Nod! We will be back with you very shortly to bring you a whole new season of tremendous tale-telling! Thanks to each and every one of you for supporting our show!

Rip Van Winkle

2021/10/15

07:32

Today we have a very special story indeed, from the New World, as it was once called! When this story was first published in 1819, America was still a country that was being explored by pilgrims from Europe, then called the Old World, and therefore America seemed very new to them. Indeed, the main character in this story, Rip Van Winkle, is of Dutch descent, and that is why his name may sound unusual to us! When Rip falls to sleep in the story, it is just before the time of the American Revolution, and so when he wakes up the world seems much, much changed to him! There are very similar stories to be found in Irish literature, and they usually concern people who encounter fairies and are then offered a magical drink or potion. Often they awake many months or even years later, the unsuspecting victims of fairy magic! So beware the fairy folk and their delicious magical drinks, or you just might wake up like poor Rip van Winkle!

Door, Open Tonight!

2021/10/7

11:12

Welcome back to the land of Nod! This week we return to the majestic land of China, with this ancient tale of poor girl who, through her good and fair nature, is looked kindly upon, and is helped by a stranger. We cannot tell exactly where this tale comes from, but we know that it has been told and retold any many times, and therefore can be found in several different versions. It has a lovely magical feel and echoes some similar fairytales from Europe, and although there is a prince involved, it is a more complex tale of rags to riches than many- we really hope you enjoy!

how Cuchulainn got his name

2021/10/1

16:23

This was one of my favorite stories as a kid and Im so delighted to bring it to you today! Every child in Ireland must hear this story at some stage, as it marries storytelling with one of our national obsessions- hurling! For those of you who have never encountered it, hurling is like a very fast version of hockey, played in the air, with sticks called hurleys and a very hard and fast ball called a sliotar! It has been around in some form in Ireland for hundreds of years and still causes great rivalry between counties to this day! This charming tale tells of the bravery of a young boy name Setanta who follows his calling against all odds, and comes face to face with something truly terrifying-will he be able to overcome this challenge and gain a place at the table of the king's trusted knights- you'll have to listen to find out! Join us next week for more fantastic tales from the land of nod!

The Giant and the Cobbler

2021/9/14

08:30

This tale is really very funny and had me smiling the whole way through! I also had such a great time creating the character for the drawing- giants are a HUGE favourite of mine! This big mean Giant isn't the first we have met in the land of Nod, but I think he just might be the funniest! Did you know the almost all major civilisations throughout the ages have had their own versions of giants?! The word comes from the Latin word used to describe the huge and fearsome creatures of greek mythology. In biblical terms, giants were said to be the offspring of fallen angels, and two of them were called GOG and MAGOG- what wonderful names for Giants! We are not sure what the giant's name is in this story, but we know that he is big and mean and a little bit silly, so wait and see if he can be outwitted by a tired and hungry cobbler on his way home from a hard day's work! We hope you enjoy this story as much as we did! Join us next week for another wonderful tale from the Land of Nod!

the cat and parrot

2021/9/9

07:08

This is a tale of a greedy cat who decides to gobble up everything he sees! Little did I know when I chanced upon this little tale that it follows in a long tradition of swallowing tales! Did YOU know there was such a thing? Well, stories like this( of poor creatures being swallowed but escaping in the end!) can be found in the stories of Ancient Titans of Greece, and even in the bible, with the story of Jonah and the Whale! Many children's stories are based around this fantastical element of swallowing-and we have come across it in our stories of The Wolf and the & Little Kids and The rooster, the Mouse, and the Little Red Hen! The story is, of course, about good triumphing in the end, and the bad guy getting his just deserts and ultimately being left to lick his wounds-quite literally! We really hope you enjoy this wonderful tale!

Pandora's Box!

2021/9/1

Welcome back and thank you so much for joining us once again in The Land of Nod. Today's story is what is called an origin myth, and that means it tries to tell us where something comes from. People have always wanted to know why things are the way they are, and the story of pandora's box attempts to explain to us where all the bad things in the world come from, and how we might attempt to combat them. it is an extraordinarily simple yet beautiful tale, and I hope it speaks to you as much as it did tome. Join us next week for more magic from the Land of Nod!

Fox tricks Wolf!

2021/8/19

10:24

Welcome back to the land of Nod! We are so glad you have joined us for this fantastic tale! Today it is a tale all about the gullible wolf and the tricky fox, and what a funny tale it is! It is hard to know exactly where this story originated, versions of it have popped up in Spain, in Germany, in the Middle East, and even in Alaska! This means it is a story that many people have enjoyed for a very long time, so they passed it to a friend, who passed it to a friend, who passed it to a friend, and after a long, long time, it had reached its way all around the world. Isn't that incredible? So now, it is just the right time for me to pass this story on to you, and if you really like it, well, then you know what to do!!

The Song of Beowulf

2021/8/12

11:47

Greetings!Welcome back to the podcast and let me introduce the heroic Beowulf! Beowulf is an epic poem that is one of the most important texts in old English (that's an English that was spoken thousands of years ago and sounds very different from what we speak today!)

Monster alert! There is a monster in this story, and like most monsters, he's not the most pleasant chap! I try to be careful about the monsters I choose for the podcast because some of them are unnecessarily scary! I do, however, think that some monsters have a place in our unconscious as a society-they are often very relatable for little children, as they represent something-our deepest darkest fears and feelings for which we may not have words! That's why they have been a constant feature in stories from the start of time. They represent also, struggles that can be understood, faced,  and hopefully overcome. So never fear, this monster is taken on with courage by the brave Beowulf- our monsters are sometimes not as scary when they are brought out fully into the light.

Thank you for the beautiful music!

The Wolf and the 7 Little Kids!

2021/8/5

08:09

And just like that, we are back! Welcome to Season 4 of Land of Nod! As ever this season, we will endeavour to bring you the most wonderful tales from every corner of the world! Speaking of which, what better way to kick of the brand new season than with a tale from the master storytellers themselves, The Brothers Grimm! The brothers lived in Germany over 200 years ago, and it was their life's work to travel around the country they loved and collect folktales from ordinary people. When their book, Children’s and Household Tales,  was published in 1812, it was not an immediate success. Many people thought the stories were too dark for children, even though the brothers had already tried to make them happier than the originals! This story about the wolf and the 7 little kids is a classic Grimm tale, it is dark and has moments of real tension and loss, with an ending that eventually satisfies. I believe that children are drawn to stories like this because they show us snippets of the real world in a way that is not too frightening, and the Brothers Grimm were masters at striking that balance and delivering a powerful tale- ENJOY!!

The Hare and the Tortoise

2021/7/16

05:30

What better way to end season 3 than with this timeless tale from Aesop's fables! I think we all have heard some version of this tale along the way-but do you know just how long it's been around? Well, Aesop the man, was thought to have been born in Greek about 650 BC- and because that is such a long, long time ago, very little is known about his life! We know that many years later, stories said to have been written by him started to show up all over ancient Greece, and many famous thinkers and writers refer to these stories n their own writings! All through the years, his stories have been told and retold in hundreds and thousands of different ways, all over the world. The Hare and the tortoise is one of the most famous, but the true meaning of the story is a little mysterious, just like Aesop himself! Does the boastful Hare deserve his fate or is the tortoise a trickster ? We know that slow and steady won't ALWAYS win the race, but I think the story tries to show us that there are many different ways to succeed in the race of life!

I hope you have enjoyed this season as much as I have! We will be back super soon with more marvelous and magical tales from the land of Nod!

Athena and Arachne

2021/7/9

06:53

Wow! I had to overcome a big fear of mine with this story- and TALK ABOUT SPIDERS! I had no idea that the scientific name for spiders came from this ancient story, from the poet Ovid, born in 43 BCE! It tells the story of the beautiful and powerful goddess Athena, and how her jealousy of a mere mortal causes her to come to earth to take part in a contest that will change both their lives forever. The story challenges ideas of identity and speaks of jealousy, bitterness, and loss, and its power and pathos are perhaps part of the reason it is one of the oldest stories in the world!  And I have to say that the sad story has made me feel a bit more sympathy for little eight-legged creatures- maybe this is the start of a beautiful new relationship! The music in this episode is particularly gorgeous, so many, many thanks to the creator below!!

The Tiger and the Rabbit!

2021/7/1

09:30

Welcome back friends, and get ready for a darling little fable from beautiful Korea! I was so charmed by this little story and by the book (published all the way back in 1955!) from which it came! Our story centers on the relationship between a hungry tiger and a wiley little rabbit, who outwits him at every turn! The rabbit is a very important character in Korean folklore. Did you know that there is a festival that is celebrated on the lunar calendar in Korea, and the symbol for this festival is the moon rabbit! The moon rabbit is also called the Jade Rabbit, and is said to live on the moon! It is a very busy little rabbit because it is making rice cakes in a mortar, or bowl! If you look carefully, you can see the outline of this rabbit on the moon, and its little bowl beneath it-so next time there is a full moon, have a closer look, and you might just see our little friend!

The Miller's Daughters

2021/6/24

09:16

I am so delighted to finally bring you this story from Poland! I found the most wonderful book of Polish folk tales accompanied by absolutely beautiful and really unique illustrations in the style of paper cut-outs. These are a form of polish folk-art and are made simply with paper and a pair of scissors, and the imagination, skill, and dexterity of the artist! When folk in Poland had no money to buy curtains, they often asked the local folk artist to make a paper design for them instead, which they would then stick to the window! How clever! This story follows the not uncommon plot of a man with three daughters, hoping to marry them off!  Although hopefully, this is becoming an outdated idea now, in many places over the world for many years, marriage was the main way of bringing wealth and security into a family, and therefore many folk tales have this idea as a central theme. This story impressed me because it highlights one girl's desire for education and, therefore,  independence, and there are many girls all over the world fighting for theirs every day still. This story is for them.

The Elves and the Shoemaker

2021/6/17

09:52

Welcome to another story from the Land of Nod! Today's story is another classic from the brother's Grimm and was collected in the first volume of Children's and Household Tales all the way back in 1812! It was actually the first of three stories about rascals of elves and if you keep an eye out you might just find another one down the line! The beauty of this story is in the wonderful generosity of the little shoemaking elves and in the selflessness of their acts towards the shoemaker and his wife in their time of need. It is a wonderful tale of the value of kindness, not only towards the recipient but for the giver also! Thanks so much for listening and we will be back with another wonderful story next week!

Gulliver's Travels!

2021/6/9

10:26

We are back with this version of the first part of the epic that is Gulliver's Travels! Did you know that Gullivers Travels was written by an Irishman, and an Irish priest at that! Did you also know that it was first published all the way back in 1726?! That makes my head hurt!
The story has been retold in various versions thousands upon thousands of times over the years, and remains a firm favourite with kids and adults alike.  It is a real favourite of mine because of the wonderous 6 inch high Lilliputians Gulliver encounters along with their teeny tiny cows- but you'll have to listen to the story to find out more!!

The Trojan Horse

2021/6/2

08:23

Im sure you've heard of this story before! But did you know that in the original account it was 10 whole years of battle before the Greeks came up with the genius idea of using a sneaky trick to get into the city of Troy? Did you also know that there is real evidence to show us that the city of Troy did indeed burn to the ground at one stage- so maybe there is more truth to this tale of a giant wooden horse than meets the eye! We hope you enjoy this classic tale as much as we did!

The Emperor's New Clothes!

2021/5/27

11:18

This classic comes from the master himself, the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, it was published in 1837, and has been translated into more than 100 languages! Andersen's tale is based on a 1335 story from a medieval Spanish collection, and so we see that some of the best stories in the world are those that are recycled over and over again! We hope you enjoy the timeless classic!

The Man who Bought a Dream!

2021/5/19

13:40

In this wonderful parable, we return to ethereal Japan! I found this story really interesting from the first read several months ago and it stayed in my mind. The tale tells us of a poor man who quite literally buys a dream from his friend, hoping it will bring him his fortune. The story appears in many different forms all over the world and has morphed in form along the way, but the general teachings remain the same, honesty, fairness, and integrity win the day in the end, and in a way I guess we all buy dreams in some form or other, and its a dream to bring this one to you all!

The Magic Conch Shell!

2021/5/12

09:03

Aloha! Today we have the privilege of traveling to one of the most beautiful places in the world-Hawaii! Hawaii is an ancient place with wonderful ancient stories of how the islands came into being, with its landscape being forged by the mighty gods themselves. The four main gods (Akua) are Ku, Kane, Lono, and Kanaloa. Then there are many lesser gods (kupua), each associated with certain professions (theres a god for each job!)

Our gorgeous story today is about an item that is very important in Hawaiian tradition, the Conch shell! I have read that in Hawaii it is called a Pu shell and there are two main kinds-I hope my Hawaiin friends can confirm this for me? In ancient times, the Pu was sometimes used to accompany chants, and most often used to announce the beginning of a ceremony. Today the shell is used to announce the opening of the Hawaii State Legislature, presentation of the royal court at festivals and for traditional ceremonies. The PU is also a popular commencement tool at weddings and luaus, and also have been used to honor royalty and famous people. I hope I get there to hear it for myself someday! We hope you enjoy today's story about King Kiha and the Magic Conch Shell!

The Race to be King!

2021/5/5

09:03

This week we return to the majestic continent of Africa, and find a very funny and entertaining little tale! I found this wonderful story in a lovely old book of myths and legends from Africa, but it is mysterious in its original exact origins, and like some of the best stories, it might have traveled around quite a bit! It is common in stories from Africa to include animals with human characteristics, and one of the archetypes here is the trickster.  The trickster is an animal who outsmarts those around him to his own advantage, and often wins the day because of these games! In this tale, the frog and lizard are brother princes, vying for the throne! One of them will play a little trick to get that crown-the only question is, which one will it be, lizard or frog?!

Thank you for the beautiful music!

Thank you all so much for joining us for season three! This season we start off with the epic tale of Thomas the Rhymer, also known as True Thomas, or Thomas of Erclidoune! He was a laird (or lord) and reputed prophet with astounding gifts of foresight! This tale explores just how he came to acquire these mysterious gifts, and it involves a dark forest, an unexpected journey, an elfin queen, and transportation to another realm- sure,  what else could you ask for to kick off season three!

To wrap up the second season of stories we return back home to Ireland to meet the King of the Leprechauns! This is a hilarious glimpse into the world of the REAL Leprechauns, and they might be a little more feisty and mischievous than you think! The Rice Road

2021/3/31

10:06

This week we travel to the wondrous country that is China!

For more than half of the people on earth, rice is life. Every third person on earth eats rice every day in one form or another.  It is the grain that has shaped the history, culture, diet, and economy of BILLIONS of people of Asia for hundreds and hundreds of years! This Taoist legend is all about the importance of rice and how a greedy and wasteful man was taught the greatest lesson of his life by the person he least expected! What a beautiful story!

Thank you for the most beautiful music!

How Rabbit stole Otter's Coat!

2021/3/24

07:42

I read so many stories in preparation for this week’s podcast and I was so struck by the beauty of these stories from the ancient Americas. The reoccurring themes of the elements of nature, the wind, water, earth, and the sky, their faith in the natural world, and their knowledge of it were incredible. Their stories are full of respect for the world they live in and I think there is so much wisdom to be found in us now returning to these tales to relearn what many have known to be true since time began. I hope you enjoy this beautiful tale from the Cherokee people.

Saint Patrick

2021/3/22

08:53

How could we not do it today of all days?! This day is so special here in Ireland and all over the world! It always amazes me how one tiny country has managed to spread its story so far and wide and that so many millions of people identify as or with Irishness. The message has been helped in no small part by one of our Patron saints, and this is the story of his life. Although Patrick is obviously a Christian icon, reading back  this story as an adult, I feel the story transcends religion as we might think of it today The life of Patrick is a storytelling full of simple faith, hope, and love, and surely these are the ideas that rise to the top of any good tale. Thank you for reading and listening- La fheile naomh Phadraig daoimh go leir.

Manachar and Munuchar and the Leprechaun!

2021/3/17

06:31

St.Patrick's Day Bonus episode!
This really is the strangest and funniest tale- and I remember these names sticking in my head when I was a kid! I could find many versions of this story but little information on where it came from- it is as mysterious as the characters themselves! I love how it describes the more traditional idea of what a leprechaun is also- they are said to really be more devious and cunning than the happy chap we see on the box of Lucky Charms! I hope you enjoy this bonus story for St. Patrick's day! La fhelie naomh Phadraig daoibh!

Fionn and the Fianna

2021/3/8

09:58

The Fianna was a mighty group of warriors that guarded Ireland for the high king,  who lived at Tara.  There are many, many stories about the Fianna, and we have met Fionn before, in the tale of how the Giants Causeway was created! Today's story tells us how another brave deed leads to Fionn becoming the leader of the Fianna, like his father before him.  There is so much to explore! We really hope you enjoy this beautiful tale! :) x

The Crane Wife

2021/3/2

11:18

Aw! Beautiful Japan! I've always wanted to go to Japan and this story hasn't helped in these lockdown times! Everything about this story is beautiful- the names, the descriptions, the story itself! Lonely Osamu helps a poor injured bird, and is greatly rewarded in unexpected ways,  but will his curiosity be his downfall? This might just be my favourite story so far!!

Special thanks for the beautiful music!

The Runaway Pancake!

2021/2/16

07:23

It's PANCAKE DAY! Do you have pancake day where you live? here in Ireland,  we call it Pancake Tuesday as it is always a Tuesday and it always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday! Other parts of the world call it Shrove Tuesday (shrove was another name for confessing one's sins!) or Mardi Gras, which literally means Fat Tuesday! making pancakes on this day may have been a way for people to use up their supplies of eggs and milk before fasting with very basic food for Lent! This silly little tale of the runaway pancake is from Norway, and with its repetitive refrain and curious characters, will be a sure-fire hit with smaller kids! We hope you enjoy it- we are off to fill our bellies with yummy pancakes!xx

The Voyage of the Poppykettle!

2021/2/10

09:37

This story is so magical and full of wonder! It comes from the Incan people, who once were the largest empire in America! They were a highly sophisticated and unique people, and their history is fascinating! They had many gods, some of whom we meet in this story, and we meet some mischievous little gnomes who decide to go on an amazing adventure! Their ship is the poppykettle, which is a traditional kettle used to make tea! This story forms part of my intention to include stories from a diverse range of places and peoples, and it brings me so much joy to pass it on to you!

How The Animals Came

2021/2/5

09:12

Wow! This story is just so beautiful and feels really special! It is a legend from the Dogon tribe from Mali in Africa, and tells their story of how the world was created. The Dogon are a highly artistic and creative people, they are known for their incredibly beautiful artwork, their mask dances, wooden sculpture, and their architecture. This wonderful story echos many of the elements of the story of creation in the Christian faith, although it evolved separately. It reminded me that so many cultures share value systems, an awe for the beauty and wonder of the natural world, and the necessity for human connection. I hope you enjoy listening and learning.x.

The tale of King Midas

2021/1/27

12:40

King Midas, wandering one day in his garden, comes across the wise satyr Silenus who was rather the worse for wear after a night’s drinking. Midas is feeling generous and gives the satyr food and drink to restore his spirits and is in return granted a wish from Dionysus. WHAT WOULD YOU WISH FOR IF YOU COULD HAVE ANYTHING IN THE WORLD?

The king, already famous for his wealth, chose to be given the magical ability to turn any object he touched into solid gold. Can you imagine that scenes from this story can be seen on Greek pots of clay made the whole way back in 560 BCE! That means it is 560 years before Jesus was said to be born.AMAZING!

Tristan and the Dragon

2021/1/20

12:27

The artwork for this episode was so much fun to draw! The dragon in this story was said to have "the head of a bear, the claws of a lion, and the tail of a serpent!' So I was able to let my imagination run wild! The tale of Tristan and Iseult(or Isolde as she comes to be known in some versions) was one of the most influential romances in the medieval period and makes use of the dragon-princess story which would become a staple of romantic stories. The story is one of love but not a straightforward one, which drew me to it and lends a real sense of emotion to the story. Children will enjoy the sense and adventure and pace of this tale of how true love can be a very bumpy ride! Enjoy!

Odysseus and the Cyclops!

2021/1/13

11:12

This is an ancient tale indeed! It comes from one of the most famous books in the world, Homer's ODYSSEY. The hero of our tale, Odysseus, lands on a strange island and soon becomes the captive of the giant one-eyed monster Polyphemus. The vivid nature of this story made it a favorite of the ancient Greeks, and the scene of the blinding of the cyclops, which I have illustrated here, is one that has been reproduced over and over again for hundreds and hundreds of years-isn't that amazing!!? We must warn listeners that this episode involved the Cyclops hosting a BBQ of some poor greek soldiers! It is an old story and they were often the most gruesome- I think older kids will relish the adventure in this one, however, and so to them, I pass the story on!!

Kingdom of the Seals

2021/1/7

12:40

We are back for the new year with a wonderful new season, packed full of tall tales to see us through long January evenings. Our first story is called the kingdom of the Seals and takes us to a magical underwater world where the Seal is King, and humans are often seen as the enemy! This seal story probably has its origins in Scotland, and from a creature in Gaelic folklore known as a selkie! Selkies were mythical creatures that could transform themselves from seal to human form and back again. The legend of the selkie apparently originated on the Orkney and Shetland Islands where selch or selk(ie) is the Scots word for seal. These creatures often appear in Irish folklore also and can be seen in the wonderful animated Irish film 'Song of the Sea', one of my favorites. if you or your child is a water baby, this story will definitely not disappoint!

The Night before Christmas

2020/12/21

04:40

This one was such a joy to make. It is such a beautifully crafted rhyme and it becomes more apparent each time you read it. I've created a kind of mash-up with the beautiful hymn Angels we Have Heard on High (see credit below). It's my favourite piece of Christmas music and the rhythm seemed to match this piece well. There's not much more to be said, apart from a very merry Christmas to you all, thank you so much for listening.

A Christmas Carol

2020/12/16

15:54

Scrooge, an elderly miser, is visited by the ghost of his former business partner and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. As a result of their visits, Scrooge is forced to rethink his life and is transformed into a kinder, better man. This tale was first published by Charles Dickens in 1843, but I think it is the very human trials of Scrooge that make it so easy to relate to even today. I hope ears of all ages enjoy the miraculous transformation within this story- for what time of year is more miraculous than Christmas!

The King's Secret

2020/12/9

10:59

It never ceases to amaze me that the message in these very old legends can still ring so true today. This is another favourite from the annals of Irish folk stories but has a very light and entertaining feel to it. It also addresses the topic of keeping secrets and the power of telling the truth. I also love that when this huge secret is finally revealed, it loses its power over its keepers. I really hope you all enjoy it!

Fionn macCumhail and the story of the Giant's Causeway

2020/12/1

07:23

I am so excited to bring this one to you guys! This is a story that feels as old as Ireland himself and tells the tale of the creation of one of Ireland's most striking and beautiful places, the Giant's Causeway, in County Antrim. The story is full of wonderful quirks and mischievous deeds and is sure to be a favourite for little ears far and near.

The Children of Lir

2020/11/11

10:51

Welcome back! I am so delighted to bring you this beautiful old tale from Ireland! It is one I was very fond of as a child and I would read it over and over again, its beauty and sadness were enthralling to me.  A king remarries and his new queen grows jealous of his beloved children. Soon, a wicked plan is put in action and the children are doomed to a terrible fate, but can the spell be broken and the children set free?
