Redge’s K.N.I.G.H.T. School, a Dorktales Lore Story

2023/3/9

15:38

Welcome to Redge’s K.N.I.G.H.T. School, the Knowledgeably Noble Institution for Gallant Hero Training! Here Hedge Knights in training discover their own inner powers, cultivate their courage, celebrate everyone as they are, defend the realm from darkness, and BRAVELY bring about the light. Young Archie doubts he has the right stuff, afraid that he will never be worthy enough to take such a hedge pledge. He’s ready to leap when he learns that he already possesses exemplary knighthood qualities—a kind heart, the curiosity to learn, and the power of his own story!

This episode includes the song, Firefly Light, an anthem to our own heroic journeys and the importance of our communities and the stories we share together.

SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR PARENTS AND EDUCATORS: In our stories, we incorporate empowering messages and lessons for kids, especially those who are being marginalized and misunderstood. This is an important episode for our team because both of the voice actors are on the autism spectrum—one who is a seasoned professional and the other who is just beginning his acting career. They embody the themes in this story: to be yourself, share your gifts, empower others, and brave your fears to bring about the light. They are working together to find their places in a world that doesn’t always accept those who are different.

Country Redge vs City Rodge

2023/2/23

16:48

Rude! Ill-mannered! Uh oh! After only one night of their visit, Mr. Redge declares that his cozy, country inn experience is over for his city cousin, Rodge. It seems that these two are set on squabbling instead of enjoying their time together. Does Rodge really feel superior because he lives in Litropia and not the Folktale Forest? See how this tale of competing and comparisons turns into acts of mutual appreciation.

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This story was inspired by Aesop’s fable, “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse.” The narrative illustrates how easy it is to make the wrong assumptions about someone else’s behavior, and how we can envy what others have instead of appreciating all the good things in our own lives. Be gracious and grateful instead of judgmental and resentful.

A Winter's Tail

2022/12/15

14:21

“Poppycock, nonsense and hedge-hogwash!” declares Mr. Redge when he learns winter is responsible for all the cold white stuff making his wallaby friend’s toes and tail freeze. Before emotions heat up to a high degree, the magical weather pixie known as Jack Frost pops in to share what’s so cool about the chilly season. Can he ultimately prove to the Folktale Forest’s creatures that there’s no business like snow business?

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This story was inspired by the tale of Jack Frost, a personification of frost, ice, snow, sleet, and winter. 2022/12/1

05:33

‘Tis the season of good cheer and you, dear listeners, are our reason to be merry! Once Upon a Times’ traditional hedgehog holiday has almost begun—but before the festivities commence, Mr. Redge has invited the Folktale Forest’s Society of Bards and Balladeers to give you a glimpse into the magic of Jolly Holly Day. So, with narrative expressions of joy and great glee they present the poem, ’Twas a Night Most Jolly Holly

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This episode was inspired by “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” to describe a holiday tradition from our imaginative land of Once Upon a Time. It demonstrates another important form of storytelling: the narrative poem. Poetry is a form of self-expression and it helps us understand and appreciate the world around us.

Hogenstein, a Spooky Halloween Tale

2022/10/6

16:58

It’s aliiiive!! Deep in the Foreshadow, the ever-dark lands of Once Upon a Time, lived Hogenstein, the infamous warthog scientist who invented “It’s Alive No. 5!” Using this freaky formula, a lightning rod and a fierce thunderstorm, he and his loyal lab assistant, Lugo the bat, brought a super creature to life. Muahahaha! But wait…that’s not what’s so terrifying about this tale—the scariest part is when the creature goes out into the world alone to face his fears.

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the classic, “Frankenstein,” where facing one’s fears is scarier than a spooky story. In our version, the creature goes out into the world on his own, tries things he has never tried before, and has the courage to never give up. He kept trying his best, even when the townspeople judged him before he had the chance to show them his big heart.

The Tornado Two-Step

2022/9/8

14:47

There’s tension in the Folktale Forest! Two friends clash over blueprints for Midge the Pidge’s new birdhouse. As their issues begin to spiral out of control, they learn the legend of Pecos Bill – the rootinest-tootinest, roughest, toughest cowboy who tamed a tumultuous tornado and created the Grand Canyon. Yippee-ki-yay! The tall tale ultimately calms their chaos and carves a path towards a cordial compromise.

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the classic tall tale, “Pecos Bill and the Tornado.” In the story, two friends are working on a project and tensions build when they disagree. When both are unwilling to bend, their problem begins to spiral out of control into a much bigger issue. The larger-than-life tall tale teaches them the value of partnership, communication and meeting each other halfway.

Mary Had a Little, Yes And

2022/7/28

15:06

It’s the perfect day for pure play! Sherlock Nettlesbee, the great deducing squirrel detective, joins Jonathan and Mr. Redge in an afternoon of imagination and good old-fashioned make believe. When their cloud gazing doesn’t cut it, Sherlock declares that “the Improv Game is afoot!” Can the trio find inspiration from Mary and her little lamb, Lula? Yes and…they’re sure to find a whole-lotta playful, floofy fun everywhere they go!

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This story is about making time for imaginary play! Improvisation, or improv, is when you make up a story, or a scene, or a little bit of music on the spot. The ‘Yes And’ game is when you listen to another person in your improv scene and agree with what they are saying—that’s the ‘yes’ part—and you use your own ideas to build on their thoughts—that’s the ‘and’ part. It’s entertaining and very fun, plus it also encourages listening skills, collaboration and cooperation.

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: The lessons learn in this episode include: 1) You can't get everyone to like you, but you can find people who like you just as you are; 2) competition can help us challenge ourselves, and 3) it’s important to remember that failing is part of growing.

Special Message: The WHY Behind Dorktales Storytime

2022/7/5

04:02

We’re 50 episodes in so Molly Murphy, writer, producer and composer for Dorktales Storytime—and our host, Jonathan Cormur’s sister—has a special message about why storytelling and imagination are so incredibly important to the Dorktales’ Team:

“We love making this podcast because we can tell all kids that everything they’re feeling is valid. We can give them tools for navigating the world, and stories to turn to where they can hear that they matter and they’re enough. We want to be that community for young people. We want Dorktales to be the space where kids can celebrate who they are without fear.”

The Magical Doorway, a Dorktales Lore Story

2022/6/30

16:40

On an otherwise normal day, a portal opens in a mysterious tree hidden in the very corners of a California redwood forest. Jonathan walks through the trunk and tumbles into the mystical, magical land of Once Upon a Time. Mr. Reginald T. Hedgehog, who’s out on his daily walk around his hovel, encounters this lost human. The two discover their kinship and begin their quest to bring joy and understanding to others through stories. As the sun sets behind the Cliffhanger mountains, they set sail across the Fantasea in pursuit of their first storytelling adventures!

Cue the confetti, it’s our 50th episode! For almost two years, we’ve been building our fictional “Once Upon a Time” universe—a place filled with Imagination where Jonathan and Mr. Redge take you on a journey of curiosity and acceptance – through fairy tales with a geeky twist, the histories of hidden heroes, and now, Dorktales lore stories! Our lore stories take you deeper into our anything-is-possible world-building. Will these best bro buddies help each other to safety when the bear barrels towards them in full bluster? Or will one have to learn a righteous lesson about who he can truly count on when things get tough?

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the Aesop fable, “The Two Travelers and a Bear.” The theme of this story is “What is a true friend?” Good friends don’t just care about themselves. And true friends stick by you when things are going right, and when things are going wrong.

Eugenie Clark, Hidden Hero of History

2022/5/5

15:05

A story of diving, discovery, and the Shark Lady! Fascinated by marine life as a child, Eugenie Clark grew to become a leading ichthyologist who changed the way scientists study ocean life. Throughout her career, she conducted 72 submersible dives, led more than 200 field expeditions, and pioneered the practice of underwater research through scuba diving. She cared deeply for sharks, swimming among them (and riding on the back of a 50-foot whale shark) in order to understand their behaviors. A Fowl First Impression

2022/4/21

16:00

Harumph! Why is a new neighbor making Mr. Redge’s quills stand on end? Maybe his outlook will change after hearing the story of the pompous peacock who struts his fine feathers while prejudging the friendly crane. Will he connect with the crane’s advice to stay open minded, or will he stand firm with his first fowl impression?

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the fable, “The Peacock and the Crane.” Seeing past the surface is the lesson of this story. Sometimes we tell ourselves that our value is only skin deep and it makes us feel insecure. We can also be too quick to cast judgments on others before we get to know them. It’s character that matters. Be thoughtful and kind to yourself and others.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let Down Your Science Experiment?!

2022/3/24

18:31

“Question everything!” That’s Rapunzel’s motto. The princess from Mythdom breaks all fairy tale stereotypes when she tells the story that her time in the tower was for scientific innovation and experimentation. Her patented, three-step, hair strengthening system could win her a STEM scholarship! Can she shimmy down the tower’s trellis and make her way through the peat bog path to get to the science fair in time?

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS:This is our reimagining of the fairy tale “Rapunzel.” The character, Rapunzel, breaks traditional princess stereotypes, demonstrating a passion for STEM, especially science and invention. He’s sure that he alone is the reason his team is known as the understory underdogs. It takes the tale of one parched yet patient hedgehog with a brilliant idea to prove to him that his one, two, three strikes you’re out experience is why he’s the team’s M.A.C (Most Awesome Critter)!

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS:This is our reimagining of the fable “The Crow and the Pitcher.” It’s a story about creative problem solving that leads to the understanding that success comes from practicing and building your skills step by step (or stone by stone according to the fable). Mr. Wolf’s Penumbra

2022/1/27

15:33

After worrying that the forest creatures don't respect him, Mr. Wolf exits his cave at sunset and is surprised by his new fearsome and formidable shadow. Feeling large and in charge for the first time, he struts about declaring he’s now the forest’s fiercest foe! It takes the setting sun and one small sparrow to break his illusion, and help him realize he’s already admired for being his authentic ol’ softy self.

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our retelling of the fable “The Wolf and His Shadow” with a self-acceptance message. The lesson is that your worth is not measured by your outward appearances, so you don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not so others will like and respect you. Encore: The Emperor’s New Quills

2022/1/6

22:40

Listener Favorites’ Encore! Is the fancy fabric for the emperor’s new clothes really invisible to those who are not worthy? Or is this a case of double-dealing dupery by two wily weavers? As the emperor struts his stylish self through the streets of his kingdom, it will take one forthright boy to blurt out the naked truth.

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is a retelling of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and the lessons learned are that everyone makes mistakes, even an emperor, who admits his error and laughs with the crowd when he discovers he’s made an embarrassing mistake in judgement.

The Little Redge Hen

2021/11/22

17:29

Who’s on board to help Little Redge Hen sow some seeds, harvest the wheat, and grind it in to flour? “NOT I,” say the unbelievably unconcerned cow, the overly obstinate ostrich, and the sourly stubborn sheep, who are focused on their own selfish ways. Will the barnyard besties finally step up, or will Hen’s freshly baked bread fill them with the smell of regret?

What are Dorktales?

2020/8/13

01:32

Welcome to the Dorktales Storytime Podcast. I’m Jonathan Cormur, a voice actor who, from a very young age, loved reading, watching cartoons, telling stories and making up character voices. I still do! Now with this podcast, I get to share those stories with you! I have two kinds of original tales to tell…Fractured Fairytales we call Dorktales and Hidden Heroes of History.

Hey classic cartoon lovers! Do you remember the fractured fairy tales that were a part of the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle show? Well, that’s what Dorktales are like…slightly wacky and very geeky retellings of classic fairy tales.

I’m also looking forward to telling you the stories of real-life heroes in science, technology, engineering, arts, math and human rights. These are the people—the STEAMers and DREAMERS—who made history in ways you’d never imagine.

Every story I tell is suitable for all ages—with silly parts for kids and some cleverish pop-culture references that the adult-types seem to enjoy.

We’re dropping the first 3 episodes to get you started. After listening, you can find great resources and more information about each episode on jonincharacter.com

Redge stumbles upon a dazzling, magical plant—the Radiant Root—glowing with glittering leaves and capable of conjuring a feast of the imagination for 100 creatures. The only problem? It's deeply rooted in the Folktale Forest, and even the Hedge Witch, Zinnia Fig, can’t uproot it alone. Soon, friends from all over Once Upon a Time come together to use their strengths, spells and specialities to lift the Radiant Root. Will their teamwork turn into a triumphant night that will stay in their hearts forever?
