Maarten and the Lost Letter

"Maarten and the Lost Letter" opens in September 1573 as Maarten van der Mey, a carpenter from Alkmaar, volunteers to smuggle a desperate message past a sixteen-thousand-strong Spanish army besieging his town. Armed with only a hollow jumping pole and his knowledge of the marshes, he slips through reed beds in the dark, freezes under the boots of sentries, and battles bureaucrats who value cattle over lives. When the crucial letters from the Prince of Orange are lost in a flooded marsh on the return journey, the mission seems finished — but fate has other plans.
