October 6: VEN. ALPHONSE GALLEGOS: No One Left Behind

Bishop Alphonse Gallegos drove straight into Sacramento's most dangerous neighborhoods and learned every young man's name.

Shaped by years of feeling overlooked after a childhood illness, Alphonse grounded his ministry in long hours of silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament every day. He then walked into gang territory again and again, treating young men others had written off with real dignity and kindness, until his death on the very night he'd administered Confirmation.

"You matter to God."
