The Weeds

In The Weeds, a bumper harvest leaves the poppy, thistle, dandelion, burdock and harebell with a problem: hundreds of seeds and no place to drop them. The rye warns them off her field, so each wildflower hatches a sly plan involving a gossiping breeze, a hunted hare and a half-blind old dog. Carl Ewald's story is playful and sharply observed, and it turns on the rye's pride as spring approaches and the uninvited seedlings begin to sprout.
