The Gluttonous Girl

"The Gluttonous Girl" is a witty folk tale in which a lazy, greedy daughter is accidentally praised by her mother to a wealthy merchant, who promptly decides to marry her — convinced she is a devoted spinner. On the first evening, three peculiarly afflicted old women arrive to watch the new bride spin, and she is utterly hopeless. But when her disasters make the old women laugh so hard their ailments vanish, gratitude turns to generous action, and the young wife discovers a surprisingly durable way to avoid her husband's expectations ever after.
