The Princess and the Gentleman

"The Princess and the Gentleman" is a short fairy tale about a princess who tests every suitor with a dead chicken — waiting for the one quick-witted enough not to flinch. When a young man sends the chicken ahead with a note, she laughs, and then falls in love. He is not wealthy, but he is clever, and together they face her father's disapproval with ingenuity and patience — tunnelling out through a garden statue and vanishing into ordinary life before fate steps in unexpectedly.
