The Little Bird

"The Little Bird" is a fable about an old peasant couple who boast they would never have made Adam and Eve's mistake in Paradise. Their master, a clever count, takes them at their word — installing them in his palazzo with every luxury, on one condition: never lift the covered dish at the centre of the table. The couple agree easily, until the last plate is cleared and the dish sits alone before them, its secret unbearable. What follows is both funny and pointed.
