The Booby

"The Booby" is a folk tale about a well-meaning but hopelessly literal boy who cannot seem to follow instructions without comic disaster. Sent out by his widowed mother to sell a piece of linen, he ignores a mayor's wife willing to pay double, then sells the cloth to a stone statue — and accidentally discovers a fortune inside it. Each blunder that follows is more absurd than the last, from selling gold coins as rusty nails to fleeing with a door on his back — yet every catastrophe somehow turns to his advantage.
