The Beggar and the Chick-Pea

"The Beggar and the Chick-Pea" is a sharp folk tale in which a crafty beggar exploits a chain of small accidents to claim larger and larger compensation from helpless cottagers. Beginning with a single lost pea, he bullies his way to a hen, a pig, a calf — and finally demands a farmer's daughter. His scheme collapses spectacularly when one quick-witted mother refuses to be intimidated and devises a trap that turns his own audacity against him.
