The Value of Salt

"The Value of Salt" is a compact folk tale about a king who asks his three daughters how much they love him. While her sisters offer grand comparisons, the youngest answers simply: "as much as salt." Insulted, the king banishes her to a closed wing of the palace. Quietly heartbroken, she devises a single, elegant test — persuading the cook to prepare her father's dinner without one grain of salt — forcing the king to taste, quite literally, what he had dismissed.
