October 3: VEN. MATTHEW TALBOT: The Man Who Came Home

Venerable Matthew Talbot drank himself to ruin for sixteen years — then walked away from alcohol forever and never looked back.

A Dublin laborer trapped by addiction since his teens, Matthew made a pledge to his mother to stop drinking entirely, then went to confession and never touched another drop. He began attending daily Mass before work, gave most of his wages to the poor, and secretly wore penitential chains and cords under his clothes — a hidden life of holiness no one discovered until after his death.

"Go, in God's name, but don't take it unless you're going to keep it."
