"Saving a Tail" puts young readers right in the moment Jack confronts his cousins' casual plan to dock their new fox terrier puppy Buster's tail for the sake of appearances. Buster — white with mismatched ears and black spots — has been part of the family for only a week when Jack and Evelyn discover what is about to happen. Jack's quiet, direct challenge forces Marian and Jock to truly consider what pain means for a creature entirely in their care.
