The Sun Dial

"The Sun Dial" opens with a sun-dial humbly declaring its complete dependence on the sun — a flattering confession that sets the tone for this clever, lightly humorous exchange. The sun-dial lists all the glorious things named in the sun's honour: sunflowers, hummingbirds, gleaming opals. The sun glows with pride — until the sun-dial carelessly adds sunstroke and sun fever to the list. What follows is a small, sharply observed moment of embarrassment, forgiveness, and quiet resolve.
