Jack-in-the-Pulpit

Jack-in-the-Pulpit, a striped woodland flower, opens his morning sermon to the gnats and flies gathered in the damp forest shade. He speaks warmly of his red berries, his stately cousin the calla lily, and his deep fondness for small creatures — but beneath the cheerful preaching, Jack harbours a private confession he never shares with his audience. The gap between his charming words and his quietly predatory nature gives this brief tale an ironic sting that lingers well past the last line.
