The Whippoorwills

"The Whippoorwills" follows a boy who loves the haunting night-song of whippoorwills so deeply that he captures first Mr. Whippoorwill, then Mrs. Whippoorwill, hoping to keep their music close. But inside the wire enclosure, both birds fall completely silent — their song belonging only to darkness, solitude, and the deep woods. The story builds quietly toward the moment the boy must choose between possession and understanding, and what happens when he finally lets them go.
