Nine Years Old

"Nine Years Old" is a short poem narrated by a canary bird celebrating his ninth birthday — a milestone he knows is remarkable for his kind. Though he lost his sight a year ago, Dicky describes his small world with quiet contentment: familiar cage corners, birthday treats of lettuce and apple, and a devoted mistress who kisses him goodnight each evening. The poem captures the tender, wordless bond between the bird and the woman who cares for him with such patient, daily devotion.
