The Abused Pencil

"The Abused Pencil" follows Gerald, a boy drowning in homework he finds impossible — maps, arithmetic, nothing sticks. He falls back on his worst habit: chewing his pencil to pieces. In a dream-sharp moment, the wounded pencil speaks up, bandaged and indignant, insisting that thinking is a boy's job, not a pencil's. The pencil's quiet dignity stings more than any scolding. Gerald wakes to find the lessons waiting — and surprisingly manageable.
