The Onions

"The Onions" brings a schoolroom window box to life as lettuce, a geranium, and a young onion seedling debate usefulness, beauty, and recognition. The onion, usually too discouraged to finish its thought, finally voices a quiet grievance: people rely on onions constantly yet eat them in secret, as if craving them were something shameful. Even while flavoring half the dishes in a decent kitchen, the onion receives no credit — a small, wistful meditation on doing essential work that others take for granted.
