Blackie’s Escape

Blackie's Escape is a quietly tense story about a black curly-haired dog named Blackie who, while his owner Doris is busy, wanders off and finds a bone in the road. Doris recognises the danger immediately — someone has left poisoned bait out for stray dogs — and throws it away. But the damage may already be done. As Blackie grows listless and keeps stopping to eat grass, Doris cancels her plans and nurses him through the night, watching his brown eyes for signs of trust and hope.
