The Limpets

"The Limpets" opens on a boyhood memory of a rocky shoreline where a flat stone crowded with shellfish — Limpet Rock — anchored the summers of childhood. After a fierce overnight storm strips the rock bare, the narrator and five friends discover the limpets huddled miserably in the shallows, driven from home. What follows is quietly remarkable: before lunch is finished, the creatures have found a new, larger rock and settled in without drama. The story asks what it means to lose a home — and to simply, calmly replace it.
