"A Letter to Santa Claus and the Answer" opens with a father's account of a tearful boy named Harry Armstrong, standing alone before a toy-shop window at Christmas. After losing his father and being cast out by a cruel stepfather, Harry faces the cold with nowhere to go and fears Santa won't find him. When siblings Jack and Evelyn hear his story, Evelyn writes straight to Santa — and that night, a soot-stamped reply arrives from the North.
