A Christmas Carol

"A Christmas Carol" by Christina Rossetti opens with a child's plaintive question: if the Shepherds had an angel and the Wise Men had a star, what guide is there for a small child trying to find the way home? Moving through the nativity story — the watching shepherds, the angels singing glory, the Wise Men bearing gold, frankincense, and myrrh — the poem arrives at a tender moment of self-examination, as the child wonders what gifts they might offer to God.
