The Christmas Tree in the Nursery

"The Christmas Tree in the Nursery" is a Christmas poem by Richard Watson Gilder that captures the breathless wonder of two small children waking to find a glittering tree beside their beds. From its candles, dolls, pink dogs, and singing birds to a tiny fairy-like figure calling from the treetop, the tree blazes with impossible colour and promise. The poem builds to an exhilarating rush as twenty small toes kick the air and the children claim every last gift in a blink.
