The Little Gray Lamb

"The Little Gray Lamb" is a Christmas poem in which a small lamb with a gray fleece longs desperately to be white like the rest of the flock. Separated from the others by shame and a deep sense of unworthiness, the lamb pleads with the moon, the clouds, the roses, and the woods — each refusing in turn. When the Star of Bethlehem blazes and the shepherds rush to the manger, the little lamb hangs back, convinced it does not belong. What happens when the Christ Child turns his gaze to the door makes this a quietly powerful meditation on humility and grace.
