Why The Bear Sleeps All Winter

"Why The Bear Sleeps All Winter" is a free fable by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey that blends woodland charm with a satisfying origin story. Industrious Brother Rabbit has long suffered under old Bear's bullying — his vegetable stores raided, his warm leaf bed invaded. Fed up, Rabbit rallies a band of forest friends: Frog, Squirrel, Mole, and the clever Brother Fox. Together they hatch a quiet, mud-and-leaves plan while Bear snoozes in a hollow log — and what Bear discovers when he finally wakes up changes his habits forever.
