The Money Pig

The Money Pig is a short story by Hans Christian Andersen set in a child's toy-filled room, where a clay piggy bank sits atop a wardrobe, swollen with coins and swollen with pride. Too important to be asked anything directly, it watches the other toys — a chatty doll, a rocking horse, a nutcracker — perform a little play in its honour. As the piggy bank quietly drafts its will and dreams of a grand funeral, it never considers how suddenly everything can end. A wry, quietly sharp tale about vanity, self-importance, and the fragility of status.
