The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep

The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep is a short story by Hans Christian Andersen about two delicate porcelain figurines who share a quiet love on a parlour table — until a grotesque carved suitor and a nodding Chinese mandarin threaten to tear them apart. When the shepherdess is promised to the hideous field-marshal-major-general-corporal-sergeant, she and her chimney sweep flee through darkness and soot toward the vast, starlit world above the rooftops — only to discover that freedom is far more frightening than they imagined.
