Making Jack-o'-lanterns is a short Halloween story following three schoolboys — Jack, Bill, and Harold — as they carve pumpkins on a chilly Halloween eve. Jack remembers three newcomer boys living near the tracks who have never seen a Jack-o'-lantern and couldn't bring one to the school Halloween party.
