A Surprise

"A Surprise" is a short story that follows a group of acorns buried by a well-meaning chipmunk who plans to return for them in spring. Hidden beneath fallen leaves and snow, the acorns sleep through winter — only to wake with a stirring urge to stretch, crack open, and reach toward the light. As tiny green shoots push through the dark earth into a sunlit world of birdsong and blossoms, Mr. Chipmunk returns to find his stash mysteriously gone, replaced by something he cannot explain.
