Uncle Wiggily Goes Chestnutting

Uncle Wiggily Goes Chestnutting is a short story by Howard R. Garis in which the kindly old rabbit takes squirrel brothers Johnnie and Billie Bushytail on an autumn drive through the woods to gather chestnuts. When they build a small fire to roast their harvest — and some found apples — a grumpy farmer arrives with a gun, furious that his fruit has been taken. With no time to run, the trio's fate rests on an accidental and explosive property of chestnuts roasted whole, turning a tense standoff into an unexpected escape.
