The Open Gate

"The Open Gate" is a short story set on a lively farmyard where one moment of carelessness sets off a chain of consequences. When young Dick forgets to latch the gate, the spirited brown colt seizes his chance and gallops off toward the blue hills, revelling in his freedom — until the world beyond the farm turns frightening. Back home, Dick carries the guilt of his mistake while Fleet the shepherd dog and the barnyard animals await the colt's return. The story captures both the thrill of escape and the ache of regret with quiet warmth.
