The Talking Animals

"The Talking Animals" is a short story in which two children, Hulda and Nathan, become lost while chasing a squirrel through the woods and stumble into an enchanted forest where animals live in houses, cook meals, and speak like neighbours. From a hospitable owl to a sociable bear, each creature warmly welcomes them — and proudly insists their babies are the most beautiful in the forest. The story builds gently toward a witty, knowing exchange between the two children about honesty, kindness, and the small social lies we tell to spare others' feelings.
