Uncle Wiggily And The Red Squirrel

Read "Uncle Wiggily and the Red Squirrel," a short story by Howard R. Garis, free online. Uncle Wiggily sets off at night to find his fortune at the end of a moonbeam, narrowly escaping two mischievous boys along the way. Deep in the moonlit woods, he discovers a red squirrel-girl anxiously brushing her tail, wishing it were as full and fluffy as a gray squirrel's. What unfolds is a gentle lesson in self-acceptance — tested when a savage bear lurches out of the darkness with hungry eyes.
