The Gnomes

"The Gnomes" is a short story set in the city of Cologne, where industrious gnomes secretly toil through the night so that lazy bakers, carpenters, winemakers, butchers, and tailors can wake to finished work. The arrangement works perfectly — until a tailor's nosy wife, determined to catch a glimpse of the little workers, scatters peas across the floor to trip them. Her curiosity triggers a chaotic tumble that sends the gnomes fleeing in a panic, and from that night on, they are never seen again.
