The Child of Maria

"The Child of Maria" is a Brothers Grimm fairy tale about a woodcutter's daughter taken to Heaven by the Virgin Maria, where she grows up among angels in golden clothes. At fourteen, she is entrusted with the keys to thirteen doors — forbidden from opening just one. When curiosity wins out and she lies to cover her sin, she is cast into a wilderness, stripped of her voice and her freedom. Years later, a king discovers her and they marry, but Maria returns repeatedly to demand confession — each time taking a newborn child as the cost of the Queen's unbroken silence.
