Christmas on the “Polly”

"Christmas on the 'Polly'" is a Christmas poem set aboard a ship sailing through a winter storm, where a captain's young golden-haired daughter wonders aloud whether Santa Claus can find her at sea. Her innocent question moves the rough sailors deeply, and overnight they fill her stocking with shells, coral strings, a carved ivory elephant, and other seafaring treasures. On Christmas morning, her joyful trust transforms the whole crew, turning the howling gale into something that feels like a carol.
