Misplaced Confidence
"Misplaced Confidence" by Florence E. Pratt is a humorous Christmas poem about a little boy named Willy, found sobbing in the corner on Christmas morning. His cunning plan: give grandpa skates, aunty a fairy-book, and mama a pair of reins — all toys he secretly wanted for himself — banking on the grown-ups' generosity to hand them straight back. Instead, grandpa is out skating, aunty is deep in the fairy-book, and mama is gleefully playing horses. Willy's tearful confession reveals a scheme undone by its own logic.
