A Legend of Saint Boniface

"A Legend of Saint Boniface" retells the dramatic medieval legend of how the Christmas tree came to be. Deep in the forests of Hesse, Germany, the English missionary Boniface leads a small band through winter darkness to confront hundreds of pagans gathered around a sacred thunder-oak for yuletide sacrifice. When Boniface and his companions take axes to the ancient tree and a sudden wind brings it crashing down, a small unharmed fir standing beside the wreckage becomes the symbol of a new faith — and a beloved tradition is born.
