A Christmas Chime

"A Christmas Chime" rings out as a jubilant call to let the Christmas bells stir every weary and lonely heart. Kavanagh moves through three stanzas — from the shepherds witnessing the star and the angel choir, to a wish that music bring hope and trust to the worn, to a final appeal for all people, mighty and lowly, to lay down hatred and offer God not gold but love itself. The poem builds in warmth and moral urgency with each toll of the chime.
