The Hard Times in Elfland

"The Hard Times in Elfland" is a comic Christmas poem in which a father plots to curb holiday spending — until a gaunt, coughing Santa Claus tumbles down the fireplace on Christmas Eve. This Santa has been swindled by a crooked railroad promoter, lost his reindeer, and can barely afford toys. Yet despite bankruptcy, bad weather, and a nagging cough, he and his family whittled and sewed a humble pack themselves. The poem moves from domestic humor to warm-hearted pathos as Santa refuses to let hardship cancel Christmas.
